Pinch hit just uploaded! There's still some editing to do and I'm not sure about the title, but it's done. Now even if I don't get any treats done, I'll feel productive. And maybe I can write the other Christmas story I have been thinking of and get it posted tomorrow or Tuesday morning, before the Yuletide rush. Gah. How is Christmas on Wednesday? HOW DID THAT HAPPEN?

I've got six varieties of ice cream already in the can and a few more to go. Tomorrow, dad and I will run some errands, and then I will do more ice cream, plus start the cookies. Since the latter are just for us, there's no real rush on them, but I feel like we're going to be hopping until Christmas day, and then after that I should have some time to loaf about.

12/22:
liseuse asked me to talk about Bucky Barnes and his Robot Arm!

DID YOU GUYS KNOW BUCKY BARNES HAS A ROBOT ARM? And he can control it even when it isn't attached, so it can punch people out and come rescue him? I AM NOT EVEN JOKING. THAT IS A THING THAT HAPPENS IN THE COMICS.

I think it's an important physical and visual reminder of what he's been through - since comics is a visual medium, it's important to have that, though I find it interesting that the arm itself (the loss and the prosthetic) doesn't seem to be a source of angst for him, that even though he hates and feels guilty about so much of what he was made to do with it, he's comfortable having it/using it, though I can't say how he came to grips with it, or if the mess that was made of his mind and his will overwhelmed the physical damage and so he doesn't dwell on it, even though it's certainly a reminder of all of that, or if he's just shoved it down somewhere deep to focus on other things.

I love that when he gets a new arm after he returns to become a nominally functional member of the world, in place of the red star, he has Steve's shield painted on the shoulder. That is also actualfax canon. The star changes from book to book, not always with good reason beyond I guess the artist thought it looked cool? But my favorite variation is when it's Steve's shield. I can only hope the mid or post-credits scene in Captain America/Winter Soldier involves him getting the shield painted on his shoulder, as if to say, LOOK, STEVE, I PAINTED YOUR SYMBOL ON MY BODY. WILL YOU MAKE OUT WITH ME NOW?

It's certainly a reclamation of the arm (and, by extension, his body - exerting his autonomy over it when for so many years he couldn't - this is also why tattooed Bucky works for me in fic) and what it symbolizes both to Bucky himself and to the world - he might take the codename Winter Soldier back, but he's fighting for what Steve believes in now (Bucky believes in Steve, first and foremost, and works out the rest as he goes), even though he's no longer wearing Steve's uniform while he does it (not that he actually wore Steve's uniform? I like the Bucky Cap uniform, though. It suits him.).

I also hope the movie adheres to comics canon in that Bucky apparently hates wearing shirts. He is shirtless A LOT. Though I guess that it's probably harder to make the metal arm look good if he's shirtless too much. Sigh.

Anyway, I feel like I could write a lot more about his arm - in "Welcome to Wherever You Are," there's a whole subplot about how he won't ever take his shirt off/let Steve see the arm, so Steve doesn't know he's put the shield on his shoulder, because he's pining and embarrassed about it, but also because he's afraid Steve is going to reject him, reject this foreign part of him, this reminder of all the terrible things he's done. I don't know if it comes through in the story, but it was definitely in my mind as I was writing.
