take up your arms, sons and daughters

I have comments to answer and work to do, but all I can think is OH SAM! and OH DEAN! and brace for what is probably going to be 39 minutes of sheer heartbreak.

(Someday I am going to rant about how SPN eps are only 39-40 minutes long when other shows are 42-43 minutes long - and yes, I have examples - but today is not that day.)

I want to write fixit fic but I have too much else to do and only a vague notion of how to make it better, because it's pretty broken at the root. Sam and Dean's relationship right now, I mean. Because it's not so much a clash of differing ideas about how to stop the apocalypse so much as it's a clash between the essential core of who they are and who they need each other to be. And man, how do you fix that?

What I mean is, Dean needs to protect Sam, it's his JOB, it's how he defines himself and his whole purpose in life, and that includes protecting him from sacrificing himself to save the world. Whereas Sam needs Dean to let him go and trust his judgement (which is, currently, faulty, imo, and this is why addiction storylines are a bad idea, because they muddy everything and those ramifications are so seldom dealt with in all their messy glory), let him sacrifice himself if that's what's required.

Both of them are going to have to make a huge shift in how they see each other and their relationship, and that kind of shift doesn't come easily, and things will certainly get even worse before they can get better.

hearseeno has a series of really interesting posts examining both Sam and Dean and their conflict this season through the prism of the Winchester family and how it shaped them. This is the last post in the series, but it has links to all the ones that came before. I don't necessarily agree with all her conclusions, but I did find it really interesting reading.

Last night I dreamt that Duncan Kane was James Potter and Logan Echolls was Sirius Black. There was a rat that was meant to be Peter, but he never took human form, and Remus wasn't there at all, but I am really disturbed by that, especially if Lilly Kane was meant to be Lily Evans.

You guys, I don't even know what to do with that.
