don't show me your weakness

So luzdeestrellas and I were talking, as we are wont to do, about Dean Winchester, and this particular conversation was about Dean and women.

There are a couple of really good posts on the subject here (by dotfic) and here (by desertport) (spoilers through Heart), so I'm just going to ramble instead of being in any way organized in my thoughts.

I think Dean genuinely likes ( Read more... )

Nothing makes me hit the back button faster than a fic with Dean being a total dick towards women. I just can't see it in canon.

I've always gotten the impression he's a bit in awe of them, I mean yeah, he loves having sex with them, but I think because he grew up without a woman-figure in his life they're a wonderful mystery to him.

Yes. Exactly. he's kind of amazed and bemused and intrigued. It's adorable and lovely and I don't understand why it gets turned into him being a creep in some stories.

You know, I read your earlier rant and didn't get a chance to comment (although I'd have just said "WTF?!") -- but these thoughts about him, which I totally agree with, they just, they really make me love Dean. I mean, Dean loves women! OMG, I love Dean!

Heeeee!

Hee! I'm glad you agree. And yes, whenever I think about it, it makes me love him more. Dean loves women. How is that not awesome?

Hee, you're so right, that's pretty much my instant reaction. Dean <3 Women = I <3 Dean!

Heh, I think heychasm just said exactly what I wanted to say.

"Dean loves women. I <3 Dean."

Dean and Women is like, a huge, huge part of his character, the part that isn't defined by his father and his brother, that is. Majorly important. If anything, Dean seems to ease around women of authority, or rather, women who keep it together. I mean, look at his reaction to Sarah, besides the fact that once he sees that Sam likes her, he completely backs off, but he geniunely likes her, bemused by her striding out of the motel room ready to join them in their hunt.

Het stories examining Dean with women are like, the thing that does it for me. The why and the how of it is just so damn interesting. And while he does flirt, he's not skeevy. I mean, I love that Dean says "Thank you" to Tara in Hollywood Babylon, and it sounded like he was genuinely pleased and happy that he made HER happy and the standard line after her flirty post-sex "You're a hell of a P.A." comment could have been like, "Yeah I know" instead, he says thank you and does this cute ( ... )

*nod nod*

It's true! And I find that completely endearing.

I agree, which is why I think I keep coming back to writing Dean/girl stories.

But when it comes down to it, Dean imagines having a life with a woman. He wants his brother to settle down, to get married, to have the dream life, but Dean kind of wants that for himself. Or at least wants to make a woman happy.Yes. I think he does want that in some way - I don't think it has to be settling down and giving up hunting - I wouldn't want it to be, honestly - but I ( ... )

Heh, it always ends with Oh, Dean, doesn't it?

My beta would strangle me if I returned to my never-ending Dean/Witches fic (I have to shoot her two other stories and one of them is 30K), so instead I'll just admire those that can write and actually finish het Dean stories.

Dean just wants to be happy! Why won't the universe give him pie without angst?

Man, I need to go to bed. That doesn't make any sense.

It really, really does.

Because the universe is cold and unfeeling, but luckily for Dean, that's what fanfic writers are for. Or, at least, this fanfic writer. *g* My manifesto is basically: Shag and be happy, Dean!

And I meant to go to bed an hour ago. Sigh.

YES. DEAN TOTALLY DIGS WOMEN.

*provides thoughtful contribution to discussion*

Because, like you said, he is a genuinely decent guy, in spite of everything. Any fic that fails to capture that, well, fails. And makes me sad.

It's one of my favorite things about him: the fact that he's this very masculine guy (well, except for his eyelashes) with an overprotective streak a mile wide who also thinks that smart, brave women are pretty much the coolest thing ever. What's not to love about that?

I'll agree that turning Dean into a creep is a wee bit beyond the pale, but -- I'm also aware that if somebody like that tried lines like those on me, I wouldn't just shoot him down, I'd saw him off at the knees. You know and I know that he's sincere, within his limited circumstances, but 99.99% of the time, in that kind of pickup scenario, it's probably not even safe, much less worth your time, to assume sincerity.

The Problem of Television is that we will probably never see a woman look him up and down and say, "Yeah? And who's going to protect me from you?"

It would wound him terribly to hear it, I'm sure, but it's the kind of line that needs to be said, and never is. In the real world, somebody would have said it to him by now, and he would deal with that social complexity (and probably work out a new approach to the hookup thereby). It is a constant (usually low-level) irritant that the real world never intrudes into the televised fantasy of sexual trust.

You're probably right, and if one is writing fanfic from an outsider's POV, I think that's a perfectly permissible approach to take.

But *we* know that he is not that guy, that while it might be unsafe to take him home, it's not because he's going to beat or rape or bully you so much as that you might get attacked by vampires or ghosts, so characterizing him as someone who would engage in any of those behaviors from his POV or the POV of someone who knows him is, imo, bad writing.

Right. Actual Creepitude (tm) is too much. But, considering Perceived Creepitude is the constantly-denied subtext, I guess I'm not surprised that careless fannish elision has made Actual Creepitude occur in fic.

(If the insertion of Actual Creepitude is for fetishistic purposes, or in order to banish the one character that more time may be spent washing behind the ears of the other, then I think we are most of the way toward Fanfic Fuckup Bingo!)

Yeah, in some cases I think it's just carelessness, but sometimes it really makes me wonder just what the author is thinking.
