It was in a bad mood that Jaejoong came back home. He parked his vehicle, totally not caring how and got off. Without thought, he picked his half-empty boxes and put them in front of his garden -as usual we could say-. However today, he was so angry that it was like he symbolised anger itself. Once the last boxes were out of the van, he entered his house. The young man threw his keys on the kitchen table, took off his jacket and his shoes as well before going into his bedroom. After getting changed with overalls, Jaejoong let himself fall on the bed. Closing his eyes, he remembered Yunho’s words: ‘I just wanted to warn you that this it just an appetiser.’ Breathing deeply, he shouted out his frustration into his pillow.
Ten minutes later, he got up and went into his living room. No one was here. He immediately remembered his mother telling him she would be visiting their neighbours and his brother was probably still taking his walk. Speaking of whom, Jaejoong couldn’t help being mad at Heechul. If the latter didn’t show up at his stand, everything would have been less bad. Letting out a sigh while frowning, the young man went to the kitchen in order to prepare the dinner.
“Kim Jaejoong, did you see the way you have parked the car?” he heard his mother scolding him a few minutes later.
He immediately went to the window and sighed. It was definitely not his day. Mrs Kim moved with some difficulties with her walking stick, accompanied by her other son.
“That is all your fault!” Jaejoong couldn’t help shouting at the latter while pointing at him with his finger.
“What in the world could Heechul have to do with this?” his mother asked quite confused as well as Heechul who was widening his eyes.
“Well, if he hadn’t showed up at the market, I surely wouldn’t have given the box, that Jung guy wouldn’t have seen this scene, he wouldn’t have smirked at me, then he wouldn’t have humiliated me, we wouldn’t have fought once again, I wouldn’t have been mad and I WOULDN’T HAVE PARKED THE CAR THAT WAY, DAMN IT!”
“Jaejoong!” his mother gasped, as she wanted to sit. “Watch your language young man!”
“Err… I’m sorry?” his brother tried to say at his sibling at the same time.
“That’s not enough,” Jaejoong replied coldly while giving his ‘I’ll get my revenge little bro’ glare.
“Calm down Jaejoong. Now boys, let’s eat before it gets cold,” the lady announced while serving her sons, one of them blushing of embarrassment under the stare of the other one.
A few miles away, a young man was humming softly to the radio while driving. Yes, that man was Jung Yunho. He was really satisfied for two reasons: this day was quite the synonym of money and he succeeded in annoying his rival. The perfect day. First, his earnings increased by fifty percent thanks to his location, and finally he managed to get the upper hand towards that Kim guy. He couldn’t be happier but he knew he had to not relax. Yunho was pretty sure the other intended to leave earlier than usual and he was ready to prevent him from taking his stand.
Five minutes later, he arrived at his home, took his shoes off before walking towards the kitchen where his family was already around the table. He kissed his mom on the cheek, ruffled his little brother’s hair and bowed in front of his father.
“Oh someone is happy,” his mother stated with a smile when her son sat next to her. “What happened?”
“I just had the best day ever.”
“You managed to sell two strawberries?” Changmin, his brother, mocked blatantly, provoking a scold from Mrs Jung.
“Well for your information little bro’, my boxes are all empty,” Yunho replied smiling, totally ignoring his sibling’s sarcasm.
All of his family widened their eyes until he received his mother’s congratulations as well as his brother’s, however his father still hadn’t said a word. He earned a ‘I’m so proud of you, dear’ but nothing from his father.
“You could say something, honey,” the lady told her husband with a slight frown.
“Is this how you’re going to earn a living? By selling those fruits?” Mr Jung reproached him. “Don’t you think you’re just wasting your time, Yunho?”
“Dad, I’m doing something I love. That’s all it matters, right?” his older son asked softly, not wanting to fight again with his father.
“You could earn more if you would just accept the job I offered you. Come to me once those foolish ideas will vanish off your mind.”
Yunho closed his eyes, breathed deeply before getting up suddenly while thumping his fists on the table.
“As if working the council in order to renovate streets or reconstruct ruined roofs is better… It could tarnish your reputation, father, if people knew that the great Jung CEO went bankrupt, right?”
“Who do you think you are to talk to me like that?” his father raised his voice. “Just leave and-”
And leave Yunho did before Mr Jung could finish his sentence. He slammed the door of his bedroom, sighed deeply and lay down on his bed. Same lecture, same speech. He had enough. Yunho proved he could earn a living with his job, why can’t his father acknowledge it? Few minutes later, he finally decided to get up and went into his garden in order to prepare his boxes of strawberries, his mind immediately went to his rival. He knew he had to beat him at all costs, that way his father might admit he could earn a living.
The dinner was so quiet that even funeral seemed happier at the Kim’s house. The eldest son still hadn’t uttered a word while the other seemed to have forgotten the fight a few minutes ago since he was eating cheerfully. Jaejoong helped his mother to walk towards the living room before doing the dishes.
After checking he had tidied everything he could, it was already 10pm and he decided to work a bit. He needed to otherwise he would be late and there was no way he could allow that to. ‘That Jung wouldn’t miss this other opportunity. I won’t let him,’ he told to himself. Jaejoong went to his garden while yawning. He was quite exhausted, even though he had to hurry: he was cold since the wind was blowing little by little. He took some of his boxes and picked his fruits.
“Hey,” a voice from behind said. “Do you need help?”
Heechul squatted down next to his brother, not waiting for an answer as he imitated his sibling’s actions. Jaejoong smiled, his brother was clever, and it was strange. ‘He must have something in mind.’
“Don’t think your little help will lessen my revenge, hm? I see you coming!” he laughed out loud.
“Ah, my bad. Anyway, I really wanted to help you,” his little brother confessed. “Remember how we used to help dad?”
A sad smile appeared on the eldest man’s face at the mention of their dead father. The two brothers shared some anecdotes and childhood memories, feeling nostalgic. Mr. Kim had left his family ten years ago but the pain wasn’t already mended. That was one of the reasons why Jaejoong took up the torch; he needed to fulfil his father’s ambition. He felt the need to follow his steps in order to ‘make his father still living’, as his mom would say.
The boys finished their task by covering the plantations with a tarpaulin because of the weather before coming back to the living room. Heechul brought his mom to her room and went to the bathroom. His brother took a shower after him and prepared his stuff; he needed everything to be ready. He had to wake up early. Really early. He couldn’t let his rival to beat him again. ‘Watch your back, Jung.’
Jung Yunho was pacing back and forth. He needed a plan, he had to have a plan, and soon. How could he be in the market before that Kim guy? He knew this wouldn’t be easy now that the other man had been provoked. However he was ready to challenge him in their odd duel. Once he was finished, he checked everything just to reassure himself. Yes, Yunho was a perfectionist. Strawberries in the boxes: done; boxes on their trolleys: done and finally the whole in his car. He sighed, stretched himself and went to his bedroom without a word when he walked past by his parents in the living room. The young man waved at his little bro’ and lay immediately on his bed. He would be up three hours after anyway.
His alarm clock woke him up indeed three hours later: at 1am. ‘That bastard is starting to drive me crazy. So much that I’m neglecting my health,’ he thought, talking about his rival, while sitting on his bed lazily. He let out a yawn, rubbed his eyes with his fists and found the strength -God knows where- to stand up. Fifteen minutes later, Yunho had already taken a shower and was preparing his stuff such as a sleeping bag, perfume with some extra clothes. He even brought some cookies plus a bottle of water. Everything was ready. He yawned once again, jumped in his car and left his house. At this moment, Yunho couldn’t help smirking.
‘5am. Good. Now get up Jae. No, don’t close your eyes again.’ Jaejoong finally obeyed his inner voice before going to the bathroom. Since he didn’t want to be late, he didn’t cook but picked a box of extra strawberries ‘for personal use’. The young man let out a sigh when he saw several boxes in front of his door. He should have brought them to his van… There, five minutes lost.
The place was empty and it was making Jaejoong smile. He just wanted to scream of joy. After parking his van, he picked his trolleys and walked towards the biggest stand. ‘Mine.’ But he didn’t expect a silhouette to stand behind it. He inspected it and widened his eyes when he finally recognize Yunho’s smirk. ‘No… This can’t be…’
“Hi Kim, nice to see you,” Yunho gave him a smile, being completely ironic. “Oh, you don’t look good in the morning by the way.”
“Wha- What… What the FUCK?!” Jaejoong couldn’t help cursing.
