First come, first serve. That’s the way life is, especially in the world of work.

Kim Jaejoong knew it but overslept for the first time. It was 7am and he was so screwed. He worked in a market to sell strawberries, helping his mother who couldn’t work anymore. He had to get up early in order to pack his things and settle in the biggest stand he could find. But this time, he knew it would be useless. He was sure that that Jung guy would be there before him and he couldn’t help but frown. Jung Yunho, his rival. He too sold strawberries and they were always fighting over customers.

Jaejoong tried to not make noises to not wake up his family who was still asleep. He dressed as fast as possible, drank a cup of coffee and went to his garden. He picked ten boxes of strawberries, that he had already prepared the day before -‘Thank God’, he thought- and put them in his small van. He glanced at his watch: 7:30am and sighed before leaving. Five minutes later, he finally arrived in the city (more like a village, but it was the biggest of the region). Parking his van on the street, he took a little trolley with some boxes in it. Mrs Choi, a.k.a Lettuce-lady, walked towards him.

“Hi Mrs Choi,” he bowed.

“Jaejoong! You’re late, what happened?”

“Overslept,” Jaejoong smiled, scratching his head.

“Yunho is already here, you have to take hold next to him,” she told him before leaving him. “Hurry up young man!”

He sighed and joined his stand. ‘Smaller of course’, he thought. He took the advantage of his rival’s absence to prepare his stand by arranging few baskets full of strawberries with the prices. Even if he still had two boxes in his van, everything seemed to be ready, he was even faster than usual! He turned around and saw the last person he wanted to see, alias Jung Yunho.

“Look who’s late!” the latter smirked. “First time, huh? How does it feel, Kim?”

Jaejoong let out a sigh and ignored him as he walked past him.

“Hello to you too!” Yunho told him as he went back to his vehicle.

Yunho was really happy, it used to be Jaejoong the first to be here who made fun of him. He finally got his revenge after almost two years. He couldn’t be more satisfied even if he sounded mean but Jaejoong was a pain to him. Every time, he made fun of him and took the bigger stand. Such a bitch he was. For the first time in two years, his rival got beaten at his own game. However he hated the guy, he was actually quite ‘happy’ (even if it was a big word) for having him as an enemy. Jaejoong was actually the only one not impressed by him and his threats, on the contrary he even threatened him more fierily. And today seemed to be a lucky one for him.

The other boy was walking to his van, completely fuming. That Jung guy… he couldn’t bear him, it was clearly not his day. He sighed for the nth time as he left his vehicle with the last boxes on his arms. Trying to ignore the other man, he sprang back to his stand before wearing his apron. He finished arranging boxes, banners, baskets and the cash box before letting out a sigh. He couldn’t help glancing at the stand next to his: it was not even that great. ‘The length doesn’t matter anyway’, Jaejoong thought with a shrug, totally contradicting his previous thoughts.

“I’ll show you that I can have more customers than you, Jung!” he yelled out of nowhere, making his rival turn to him.

“I’m so looking forward, Kim. You have no idea,” Yunho replied loudly with a grin.

“Yah you two!” Cabbage-lady interrupted them, her hands on her waist while frowning. “You’re unbelievable! Keep quiet, please!”

“Mind your own business, old biddy,” Jaejoong murmured when the lady walked away.

The young man was now in a bad mood thanks to that Jung guy. He closed his eyes, leaned on the table with his hands on it and breathed deeply. ‘Everything will be fine. I’m going to show this asshole that I can beat him,’ he told himself.

On the other hand, Yunho shook his head. ‘This Kim Jaejoong will be the death of me. I won’t let that bastard win, that’s for sure.’ Sitting on a stool, he yawned, got up and straightened his apron for the fourth time until he saw a few persons.

The first people’s arrival announced the beginning of merchant’s day. ‘Fresh fishes here! Fresher than anywhere!’ or ‘Two pounds of apples bought, the third is free!” could be heard. The key rules were to persuade and negotiate. That was the way it worked.

Jaejoong got up as well and ate a strawberry while waiting for some people. He peeked at the other man: the latter already had people in front of his stand, he couldn’t believe it. He shook his head, let out a sigh -again- and smiled in order to attract some ladies. He had to try no matter how. Few persons came to him, he even succeeded in selling some baskets but it was nothing compared to the other days, the days when he was in his usual stand. ‘Jung, you’ll pay for this, believe me!’

“Stop dreaming Jae,” a voice said suddenly, waking up the young man.

“What are you doing here, Heechul?” Jaejoong told his brother with a sigh.

“I’m taking a walk,” the other smiled. “Since I’m here, I could buy you some of-”

“Are you kidding me? You want to buy these strawberries? Our strawberries?” Heechul’s brother insisted. “You can have them for free, you dumb!”

“But I’m craving for some~!”

“So what? Ugh, God, take that little box and go!” Jaejoong replied annoyed by his sibling’s whining.

He earned a ‘Thanks Jae, you’re the best!’ with a kiss on the cheek before watching his little brother walking away. Actually, he didn’t want to get rid of his brother but he had to. If Yunho knew that he had only his family as customers, he wouldn’t miss the opportunity to belittle him. And he didn’t need that, especially today. A few minutes later, he noticed his rival smirking at him. Well, that was new. ‘No. This is strange. Definitely,’ he thought. Jaejoong looked away however he couldn’t help thinking of what happened. Something was wrong. Yunho intended to unhinge him, of course! Why didn’t he think about it earlier?

Business was pretty good for Jung Yunho. He clearly enjoyed being settled there: his stand was big, that meant more products exposed so more customers. Of course he met his regular ones but he also sold his strawberries to other people. It was great for him. His eyes wandered to the other stands, thoughtful, until he saw someone kissing his rival. ‘Well, that was unexpected.’ He immediately wanted to satisfy his curiosity. Who the hell could want to kiss that Kim guy?

“Mrs Kwon,” he smiled at his customer. “Can you tell me who is the teenager in front of Kim Jaejoong?”

“Oh that’s Kim Heechul, my dear, they’re brothers. I wonder why you don’t know him after these years,” the lady replied cheerfully after buying a basket.

‘It’s not like I wanted to know his family anyway,’ Yunho thought. He noticed that that Heechul left with a box of strawberries, it was weird… Suddenly, an idea crossed his mind: if his brother had a box, it meant that he bought it, and that Kim had no other choice but to sell his fruits to his own family. ‘What a shame,’ he told himself. Smiling to himself, he turned his head and smirked at Jaejoong. ‘I got you, Kim.’

It was definitely a long and hard day for Jaejoong. He quite understood Yunho’s behaviour towards him since he was in his situation now. Still, it was not as if he felt pity for him, of course not. Never. He had fewer customers than usual, and in the meantime he thought he must get up really early the day after. It was obvious that Yunho would try to have the bigger stand again however Jaejoong decided to have the last word. The war between them was growing little by little and the young man was ready to win this battle at all costs.

When 7 o’clock stroke, the merchants started to pack their boxes before cleaning their stand, pulling off the banners and some flags. Jaejoong stretched himself and sat on a stool while yawning. It was one of the most tiring days, he was exhausted. Lost in thought, he didn’t hear someone coming.

“Hey Kim.”

He lifted suddenly his head, his eyes meeting… Yunho’s. Letting out a sigh, he got up and ruffled his hair.

“What do you want, Jung?” he asked already annoyed.

“What an unpleasant man, oh my,” the other man sniggered while putting his hands on his waist.

Jaejoong should have expected his rival to make fun of him once again. And it wasn’t nice actually, he didn’t like it.

“Nice day, wasn’t it?” his interlocutor kept talking with a smile. “Oh yeah! Something was bothering me and I wanted you to enlighten me. Is that okay?”

The other man frowned in confusion. How come that Jung guy needed his help? ‘I’m too tired to protest,’ he thought. ‘It can’t kill me anyway.’ He nodded and the taller man spoke again.

“I wanted to ask you: How come your brother came to buy you a box of strawberries? Was it that hard for you to find customers that you asked your own brother to help you out?”

Okay, so Jaejoong wasn’t clearly expecting this. He was so knocked by Yunho’s statement that he tried to not widen his eyes. He started to panic, what should he say? He knew that even if he told him the truth, the other wouldn’t believe him. Jaejoong did it anyway; he had nothing to lose.

“Oh so you just gave him the box…” Yunho repeated. “It’s strange but I don’t believe you,” he added with a chuckle while scratching his head.

“Believe in what you want to believe, Jung,” Jaejoong sighed, a bit irritated. “I really don’t care.”

“Oh but I do! For one of the rare times, you got beaten at your own game, Kim.”

“So that’s it? You got your revenge. Are you satisfied now?”

“Not yet,” Yunho shook is head while smiling. “This is really worthless compared to what you used to do towards me. Don’t even think that I want your apologies nor your pity, I don’t need them. I just wanted to warn you that this it just an appetiser.”

“I’m not afraid of you, Jung. And don’t even think I’ll let you do whatever you want. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to go,” Jaejoong smiled before taking his boxes and going to his van.

“Sure! Say hello to your bro’!” Yunho laughed out loud before packing his stuff as well.
