A song in my whatsit!

Mar 23, 2007 11:51

I had an eleven hour workday yesterday that included seven hours of driving through Orange County and Los Angeles and four hours of being an energetic-yet-approachable corporate cheerleader. Suffice it to say I slept like the dead last night. As a result, I think I've shaken the cold that has been threatening to drop heffalump-like on me and my amusement-muse has returned with a vengance. If I can make my exchange piece half as funny as it is in my head, there will be a rash of beverage snorting.

And speaking of beverages that hurt when snorted, Pizza Port's 12-hour Belgian Beer Party starts tomorrow at 11 am in Carlsbad! I've already managed to rope ccwong and her husband into coming, and we're 95% sure we'll be able to get BJ&C (warm up yer " Hey Genessee!") down here.

In honor of the Great Belgian Beer Tour of 2007 and tomorrow's Belgian Beer Party, I humbly present my second melodious fealty to the fermented beverage (the first may be taunted experienced here). If Gilbert & Sullivan had ever wished to honor craft microbrew and were seriously intoxicated, they might have written this!

I am the Very Model of a Tipp-le-er of Microbrew
Feel free to sing along!

I am the very model of a tipp-le-er of microbrew;
I often quip that macros are like making love in a canoe*.
I know my local brewers and I regularly quaff their ale,
From Alpine Bad Boy through the Port to Ballast Point-ey Yellowtail.

I'm very well acquainted, too, with all their main ingredients;
Of hops, Saccharomyces, malts, and adjuncts most expedient,
And for attenuation they are teeming with a lot of yeast
Converting sugar into fun; Pale Beauty and the Av'rey Beast.

Converting sugar into fun; Pale Beauty and the Av'rey Beast!
Converting sugar into fun; Pale Beauty and the Av'rey Beast!
Converting sugar into fun; Pale Beauty and the Av'rey Beast!

Quite skilled am I at tastings for I know all types of hops and spice,
I know stylistic qualities that typify the hefe weiss.
In short, in terms of analyzing ales until my face is blue,
I am the very model of a tipp-le-er of microbrew.

Verse II

I know the Trappist monasteries; at Chimay I lift my nose,
For after all, it's not much fun procuring beer at Trader Joe's,
The beer bars and the cellars with their walk-in coolers make me swoon,
In part from cold, in part from seeing gueuze and lambic brewed by Boon.

I serve the unsuspecting goblets full of Cantillon FouFonne,
Just so I'll get to finish it, I'm sometimes quite a Brise-BonBons!
But I'm not such a Bastard that my Arrogance will know no bounds,
They don't like beer? Of Lindemann's Framboise I'll gladly buy a round!

They don't like beer? Of Lindemann's Framboise I'll gladly buy a round!
They don't like beer? Of Lindemann's Framboise I'll gladly buy a round!
They don't like beer? Of Lindemann's Framboise I'll gladly buy a round!

If of the "light" variety they then proclaim that they are fond,
I woo them with a nine-percenter Unibroue La Fin Du Monde!
Because I purchase tastings and with knowledge I my friends imbue,
I am the very model of a tipp-le-er of microbrew.

Verse III

The trouble is we tipp-el-ers now lack in unanimity,
To give ourselves a name inspiring all our equanimity.
The wine-ers all are "oenophiles," both "wine" and "love" from ancient Greek,
And if I can't do better I decline the epithet "beer geek."

Since "zythos" means "a love of beer," to "-phile" it would be overkill.
A "cerivesaphile" excludes the bulk of cool-fermented swill,
But leaves behind the lambics and includes a love of bread and wine,
But certain ale heads may agree the epithet will suit them fine!

But certain ale heads might agree the epithet will suit them fine!
But certain ale heads might agree the epithet will suit them fine!
But certain ale heads might agree the epithet will suit them fine!

While "krithinos," derives from ancient notables like Xehophon,
The word means "made from barley," so from candidiacy it's withdrawn
In short, though I have researched and I've quite sincerely thought it through,
I'll stay "the very model of a tipp-le-er of microbrew."
