Up and down

Welp. Christmas shopping last night was not a total bust, though stressed at the seams (i.e., I found one gift of the three or four I'd hoped to buy). But the gift I found is absolutely gorgeous and I really hope the recipient likes it (and that it fits!). Fortunately, I have half a gift for one of the other recipients (the other half is in transint and MAY arrive before Christmas) and have been encouraged to go the gift card route for the third, so all is not lost. And I am pretty much beyond being fussed about it at this point. I wish I had things under the tree for Mr. 42, but I've told him that I am getting him a new computer (since I mostly use my netbook these days and never use the desktop anymore), so there is that. I might swing by the [university] bookstore in search of some fun little tchotchkes, as they are good for that sort of thing.

I heard from the gentleman at the Episcopal church who needs a soprano, and we're in the process of setting up an audition time the week of the 4th, which is exciting and a bit scary. I shall be bringing my oratorio aria book home and attempt to find something flashy (I've been told he likes high notes) that also sounds great in my voice. It is raining and blustery today, which is lovely since I don't have to be out in it. In fact, the weather has been quite kind to me since it didn't rain on me while I was walking the dogs, waiting for the bus, or walking to my building. So thanks, weather! I am not taking you for granted, even if I do have my massive Mary Poppins umbrella today.

And speaking of which, the holmestice reveals are up, and I must must must thank greycardinal for the absolutely smashing gift, The Possibility of the Improbable, which is a delightful ACD mystery that everybody should read, especially those in need of cheering up.

And since the veil of anonymity has been lifted, I can admit to having contributed the following story. It appears as though the receipient dropped out of the fest, but I hope you'll enjoy it despite it being centered around mostly canon ships and starring the awesome ladies of BBC Sherlock. I even pilfered from early feminist drama to write it!

When I Am Laid in Earth/ At AO3At FFN
Fandom: BBC Sherlock
Characters/Pairings: John/Mary, past Mrs. Hudson/Frank, past Mary/Jim, Molly, Janine
Rating: Teen
Warnings: Shameless theft of literary devices, supernatural manifestations; triggery content (not graphic), including rape, abuse, intimidation, drugs, violence associated with organised crime.
Length: ~7,700 words
Summary: Mary goes from being figuratively haunted by her past to literally haunted by her past. Fortunately, Mrs. Hudson can help.

In other news, I'm nearly done with edits on my friend's novel, which means I'll be at liberty to finish the Limerick cycle tomorrow, just in time to fly out on Thursday. Caroling tonight at the pub, which means I need to steal a few minutes before heading out to make sure my chord sheets are in the correct keys, but other than a tiny bit of stress about that, it should be a lot of fun, even though my guitaring will be rustier than usual due to stiffness and scarring on my left middle finger (mauled by a dog last month). But I can play, and I will sing, and that's what's important!

Mostly, I need to write a bunch of e-mails today, start setting up candidate trips, make tweaks to a website, and finish lingering reimbursements. And maybe steal a friend for lunch. And try not to be blinded by the welding going on in the hall or deafened by the drilling in the floor. New mantra: two days more.

Smooches to All!
