Smithsonian Day Three

Jul 07, 2016 06:44

At the downtown Air & Space Museum this time.

Alan Shepard's REAL Mercury capsule. Robert Goddard's 1925 rocket. The "Spirit of St. Louis". The model of the Enterprise from Classic Trek. The X-1 and X-15. Tingmissartoq. The Gossamer Condor. The 1903 Wright Flyer. 100+ photos. Swapping-in the spare camera battery at around photo # 85.

And toward the end, spotting this hanging from the ceiling in the Space Exploration room. It looked familiar. Didn't I see that on the old Walt Disney show, in a "Tomorrowland" segment? Yes; on a monitor on the adjacent wall a video is running of Dr. Wernher von Braun, with this model, just like I remembered it from about age 9.

Note to self: when I come back to DC to see more of the downtown museums, do NOT come in July!

And after three days of hiking through museums, I am SO ready to sit in my truck for a couple of days, enroute to the Geneseo airshow. Which I hope does not get rained-out; the Weather Channel is expecting thunderstorms on Saturday in that part of New York State.
