so let's see

tzippi's been away at graduate school interviews for a few days so i've been out of the internet loop.

so, from where i left off in the last entry (taken from my last mass email...yes folks, you're getting a recycled update):

Thursday - Our site sponsor sent us out into the Oregon country to plant trees with middle school students. It was pretty fun and they were really amusing especially when we had a set of twins that were split into back to back classes and the first one told us about his brother so we acted like we knew who he was. There were a bunch of plants left over even after four classes of kids went through because they only had about 20 minutes. That was about enough time for us to tell them how to plant and then for them (in pairs) to plant 1-3 trees.

Friday - We spent this day traveling around the Portland area and setting up sites for Saturday's volunteer day. We basically flagged native plants with florescent marking tape and then placed them throughout the site where they were supposed to be planted the next day.

Saturday - We were in charge of two volunteer sites for the day. The site that I was at was called Wilson Creek and we worked with cub scouts and girl scouts. These scouts were much more focused and hard-working than the ones we worked with at the last volunteer day. We planted a total of 364 plants with about 64 people (including 4 AmeriCorps members). On the way home we stopped at a fundraiser car
wash and had them wash our dirty BHV (Big Honkin' Van). We stopped because there were kids dressed like clowns getting people's attention and one of them was dancing in the street. While we waited we went into the thrift store and realized that it was the thrift store that belonged to the Union Gospel Mission which we worked at in downtown Portland to get some volunteer hours a few weeks ago. though you guys get a little more info about my thrift store purchases. so i kid you not, i got 5 shirts, 5 books, and a rather large photo album for $3.

Sunday - A few of us took a trip to the Oregon Coast. We stopped first in Astoria, OR which is where the movie The Goonies was filmed. We drove around and acted like crazy tourists and took pictures of all the places that were in the movie. Then we hung out for a bit and I spent an hour or so sitting in an antique shop looking through a shoebox of black and white photographs. I got a few funny ones, but the best find was a picture of Catalina Island from 1960 which was $1 so of course I had to get that one. I also bought two postcards, one of which was from Catalina Island. I was sitting on the floor for so long that the guy that worked there offered me a chair. And a small dog scared the crap out of me when I saw a small ball of fuzz migrating towards me out of the corner of my eye. Then we went to the beach to a place called Seaside and we walked on the beach for a bit. Then it was back on the road to come back home...but we did stop and see the largest Sitka Spruce in Oregon...

then on monday we went back to the union gospel mission in downtown portland to get a few more ISP hours.

then today we were at a site clearing ivy. and i found a new way to remove it which was to tie it around your waist and then turn around in circles.

A giant root I removed:

Wilson Creek - The volunteer site I was at this weekend

Quail Creek - Where we were today

Someone buried a car!

So we all have been locked in a portapot on this trip at least once (this time it was Tzippi’s turn)

And here’s my lovely ivy skirt

Yes, I’m doing a pirouette.
