Just made splt pea soup for the first time. It's an interesting meal to make - the water balance is a real bitch. Too much and it's watery, not enough and it's mud. And expensive, too. 300 grams of dried split peas are about 300 yen from an import store ( Read more... )

I made another stab at pasta sauce tonight, and it was okay.... My standard by which all other spaghetti sauces is measured is, of course, my father's. I don't have the recipe, which was originally my grandmother's, and I suspect I would have difficulty paring it down from "Feeds an army" to "Lunch for two or three days ( Read more... )

Not nearly as scary as one might think. Need to figure out how to give the octopus chunks more flavor.... They came marinated in vinegar, which I mostly rinsed off, and the occasional tang of it was interesting.
