“Fernando!”

No answer. Confused, she turns to the woman beside her. “How long does it take to buy strawberries?”

His aunt frowns. “Not this long.”

“We should have waited before we walked down to the orchard.” She wasn’t really interested in lemon trees, but it had made Fernando’s aunt happy.

Walking into the bedroom that already feels like theirs, she only sees what’s not there. She touches the bare hollow between her breasts, thinking of the loosened clasp of her necklace, remembering putting it aside for safe keeping.

Her heart splinters in two, because it’s gone, and so has Fernando.

They don’t call the police. Despite the language barrier, the two women know the fear that is in the other’s heart. All they can do is wait.

Two days turns into four, four into six, six into eight.

Fernando’s aunt prays loudly, her still handsome face streaked with tears.

Maricruz doesn’t want to pray out of desperation and fear, but she does. One hand pressed low on her belly, her eyes are dry as she begs God to bring him back to them.

On the ninth day, she snatches up the ringing phone, heart pounding. “Hello?”

“That lying bastard!”

“Fernando?”
