No matter in which century they were forged, handcuffs are designed to cause pain. To break the skin. Leave their mark.
Perhaps, one day, he will appreciate the skill required to design a piece of twenty-first century equipment to perfectly mimic primitive shackles. Or marvel at the fact that no matter how infrequently a man is cuffed, the broken skin never seems to truly heal before once again being rubbed raw by cold metal.
Ignoring the sting of his still-chafed wrists, Michael keeps digging, cement crumbling urgently beneath his fingertips, because he has no intention of ever being shackled again.
