The Same Old Things

If Jungsu had 100 won for every time one of the trainers told him he wasn't good enough, he would be the one in the CEO seat ordering them around and telling them how bad they were at their job. But instead, he had to live with the struggle through practices and their criticisms about the same old things day after day. He worked hard to improve himself, but as a trainee, one had to learn to become better at the fastest rate possible or they would be let go. No one said that the road to stardom would be easy, but sometimes Jungsu wished that they would give him a break.
Heechul was complaining about how his mother forgot to give him a few extra won so that he could buy this shirt he saw the other day when a new face was brought into the dance studio. The boy was normal looking, not exceptionally good looking or skinny or fat, just an average boy that one could see walking through the streets of Seoul. Jungsu didn't even register the boy's name, knowing that trainees were brought in every week and would leave not even a month later and that this one would probably follow the same fate.
The dance instructor ordered for everyone to get up and practice immediately began. Jungsu quickly took his place near the back and prayed that the instructor wouldn't notice too many of his mistakes. After a few demonstrations of the first sixteen counts, their teacher started the music and watched as the trainees performed the routine. Jungsu felt confident until the music turned off and their instructor's lips were drawn into a line.
"You!" the dance teacher yelled and Jungsu felt his stomach drop. The instructor stalked over and Jungsu automatically bowed his head, but the instructor walked past him and stood in front of the new trainee. "You didn't even start until halfway through the section. Do you know how to count?"
The boy bowed and apologized, promising to do better, but as the practice went on, he barely improved. After each try, the instructor would have to correct the new boy about the same thing, or something new entirely, though the rookie's face would not stray from its stoic expression. At the end of the practice, everyone had been spared of the usual criticism at the cost of the new trainee being mercilessly scolded.
Jungsu was grateful that he had escaped the usual verbal abuse, but he recognized the way the other boy's shoulders slumped in embarrassment and shame as he was continuously ridiculed. He knew that it was the worse feeling in the world, being called out for your flaws and having strangers stand by and watch as you were judged for not being good enough.
Heechul broke Jungsu out of his reverie and asked if he was coming to get dinner with them, but Jungsu told him that he wanted to review the routine a little more and that he'd catch up in a little bit. When everyone left, the new trainee still stood in the middle of the room, trying to desperately catch his breath. Jungsu walked up beside him and slowly put a hand on the boy's shoulder. His shirt was soaked in sweat, but Jungsu waited until the other looked at him with a blank face before he removed his hand.
"You'll get used to his yelling," Jungsu said with a smile. "And even though I'm not the best dancer, I can help you."
The new boy finally reacted, his thin, pink lips spreading into a small smile. "Thank you."
Jungsu moved to stand a few feet away from the other. "Alright, so let's go through the few eight counts..." he trailed off, remembering how he had blatantly ignored the other's earlier introduction and now feeling horrible about it.
"Kim Jongwoon," the boy stated loudly with a bow. "Born August 24, 1984 in Cheonan, South Chungcheong. Blood type AB. Star sign Virgo-"
"Park Jungsu," Jungsu quickly supplied, taken aback, but also amused by the other's lively introduction. "Let's work hard, Jongwoon-gun."
Jongwoon nodded, solid determination evident in his gaze and Jungsu realized that maybe he was wrong about this trainee. Then again, his reputation for being notoriously wrong was just another one of the same old things that Jungsu was learning to improve.
