Jungsu had trained for seven, long years before he debuted with Super Junior, but when he was told that a new member, who had been a trainee for not even a year, was added to the group, he couldn't articulate exactly how he felt. However, he admitted that out of all of his emotions, he had let his anger get the best of him. When Kyuhyun had finally been introduced to the others, he gave the new member an icy-cold look and told him to watch his back. It wasn't until later when he saw the way Kyuhyun's eager smile fell and his eyes shine with fear and hurt replay over and over in his head that Jungsu realized how horrible of a person he was.
A couple of weeks passed before Jungsu was able to get Kyuhyun alone - the maknae constantly had lessons and extra practices so that he could catch up with the rest of the group - and he instantly felt bad when the younger boy put up a brave front as Jungsu cornered him, though the younger man couldn't stop shaking.
"Let's start over," Jungsu said, giving a slight bow but keeping eye contact with Kyuhyun. "I'm Leeteuk, your leader."
Kyuhyun hesitated, eyes flickering to Jungsu's eyes and away, before giving him a ninety degree bow. "I'm Kyuhyun, please take care of me," he responded, the last part spoken softly before he excused himself.
Jungsu thought that things would immediately become better, but Kyuhyun remained distant, sneaking away from Jungsu came near or freezing whenever Jungsu barely brushed his shoulder.
But Jungsu didn't give up.
He would praise Kyuhyun whenever he finished filming his part, or laugh especially hard whenever he made a joke. He would leave health drinks and medicine that his fans had given him on Kyuhyun's bed anonymously and remind him to bundle up when the weather got colder. Jungsu could see Kyuhyun slowly open up to him, relaxing when Jungsu put an arm around him or smiling whenever Jungsu made a joke. It was progress, and Jungsu couldn't complain.
But, it wasn't until the accident in April that Kyuhyun realized how much Jungsu cared. The maknae had finally opened his heavy eyelids to a white hospital room and the sight of Jungsu uncomfortably slumped in a chair in the corner. Kyuhyun could see the bandages peeking out of his leader's thin gown and felt something prick the back of his eyes. When Jungsu woke up half an hour later, he started at the sound of Kyuhyun quietly calling out to him and hobbled over as quickly as he could to the maknae's bedside.
"How do you feel, Kyuhyun-gun?" he asked, hands gripping the younger man's hand without being too rough.
Kyuhyun could feel how scratchy and dry his throat was and knew that he could only speak very little, and even then the words would come out as a garbled mess.
"Hyung," he managed, and Jungsu leaned closer, giving Kyuhyun the complete attention that Kyuhyun noticed he was always given. Jungsu always made sure to take care of Kyuhyun in a way no one else ever had and Kyuhyun didn't know what he did to deserve it, but he wanted Jungsu to have some idea of how thankful he was. "I love you."
Jungsu didn't even bother to fight the tears that immediately sprung to his eyes and spilt down his face. He clasped Kyuhyun's hand in both of his hands, grateful to be able to touch the younger man who was solid and alive. "I love you too, Kyuhyun-ah," he sniffled. "I love you too."
Their age, the years they spent training, the times they fought, they all added up to a difference between the two, reasons as to why they shouldn't or wouldn't get along. But, they were just numbers, an invention used to create some kind of divide between the two, but things that just were, like laughter and hugs and tears, bridged that gap and would continue to even as they were physically separated. Kyuhyun would make sure of that, it was his turn to show Jungsu that he wasn't just some convention, he was his hyung.
