Unfortunate misspeak

I was watching the Discovery launch this morning, and the CBC announcer said that "By all accounts, this looks like a successful launch of the Challenger space shuttle... er... rather, that is, the Discovery" You can tell where his mind was! So was mine, I gotta say. I remember so clearly that morning. I was home sick from school watching soap ( Read more... )

That was Challenger, the one that blew up on launch. Columbia's the one that disingrated on re-entry a few years back. They're both space shuttles, and both happened about the same time, so it's easy to conflate the two.

I was kinda young when Challenger happened. I'm sure I saw the footage, but I was in first grade at the time, and I'm not sure exactly what I felt at the time. Just that something bad had happened.

In fact, when Columbia happened, I did. I was drifting out of a sound sleep and my friend's parents were talking about a space shuttle and something going horribly wrong, and my first thought was "WTF, why are they talking about Challenger, the anniversary for that was a few days ago." My second thought was, "Wasn't I, if I'd been in SF instead of San Diego, going to go out and see if I could see the reentry? When was that?"

Thought three was brain waking up, putting two and two together and realizing my friend's folks weren't talking about a past disaster, they were talking about the *current* one.

So far, all American deaths in the space progam have occured over about a week in late January and early February. I hope that trend continues. Because, by all accounts, we shouldn't have sent this one up.

You're right. My mistake. He did say Challenger. I'm just overtired and typed Columbia. I'll fix that right up. :)
