I was watching the Discovery launch this morning, and the CBC announcer said that "By all accounts, this looks like a successful launch of the Challenger space shuttle... er... rather, that is, the Discovery" You can tell where his mind was! I was kinda young when Challenger happened. I'm sure I saw the footage, but I was in first grade at the time, and I'm not sure exactly what I felt at the time. Just that something bad had happened.
In fact, when Columbia happened, I did. I was drifting out of a sound sleep and my friend's parents were talking about a space shuttle and something going horribly wrong, and my first thought was "WTF, why are they talking about Challenger, the anniversary for that was a few days ago." My second thought was, "Wasn't I, if I'd been in SF instead of San Diego, going to go out and see if I could see the reentry? When was that?"
Thought three was brain waking up, putting two and two together and realizing my friend's folks weren't talking about a past disaster, they were talking about the *current* one.
So far, all American deaths in the space progam have occured over about a week in late January and early February. I hope that trend continues. Because, by all accounts, we shouldn't have sent this one up.
