Via PZ Myers, some good news out of the Anoka-Hennepin School District in Minnesota, notorious for suicides caused by bullying of gender-nonconforming children: The district has pledged better treatment of gay and lesbian students as part of a settlement, and the lone school board member who objected to the settlement has resigned.

Students of color are disciplined more harshly in school than white students are. Not news for anyone who's ever heard of the school-to-prison pipeline. Whine fodder for racist commenters, of course, who apparently never pay attention to the color of most kids who shoot up their schools (see this old essay by Tim Wise).

The late Donald Fitzpatrick was a clubhouse manager for the Boston Red Sox from the 1960s until the early 1990s. Eleven men have come forward to say that Fitzpatrick sexually abused them when they were boys.

I'm generally not an s.e. smith fan, and neither is
mero, but we agree that this essay is spectacular.

Relatedly, a blistering offensive against these dickheads (NSFW JPG):Women ARE taxpayers. Women ARE workers. Women EARN their health care every day of the year. If you think for a hot second that a health insurance package is a mere courtesy bestowed on you by a kindly employer, I pity you for sipping the antifreeze so willingly. Do you realize who is really benefiting from that freedom of conscience you so raucously defend? It isn’t you, that’s for sure. You have just given away your rights to decent employment, by framing health insurance as a sort of largess sprinkling down from the corporate king. How easily you sell away your own labors, your own bodies, pretending you haven’t given up your choices because you pay “out of pocket.” Thinking you’re the harder worker because you’ve agreed to accept less than what you’re due. No, I’m afraid that doesn’t make you heroic. It makes you dreadfully, painfully gullible.
Of course, wingnuts and other misogynists don't believe women work or earn anything on our own. We just extort it from men through our vajayjays, am I right? Ask the MRAs on Reddit who are yelling at Rebecca Watson, "How dare you say we hate women, you cunt?!" (Via Ophelia Benson.)

The writer of the pro-contraception rant, Sierra, is a former member of the "Quiverfull" movement. Last month she wrote this essay on how the "modesty doctrine" not only oppresses women but hurts men.

According to
happiestsadist, "The Rick Mercer Report is pretty much the best thing ever. Beats the hell out of Jon Stewart and has been doing it longer."

A Polish woman attacks a Nazi at a 1985 Nazi demonstration in Växjö, Sweden. She had spent time in a concentration camp during World War II. Minutes later, thousands of others chased the Nazis away.

Santorum nail polish. WHY.

And here's some skin art that hurts a lot more than getting a tat does:

It's a Lichtenberg figure, or a pattern of branching electrical discharges, that blossoms on the skin of lightning strike victims when capillaries burst.

"[Chris] Christie has said that [New Jersey]'s school-funding formula sends too much money to low-income districts that continue to underperform, while suburban systems are shortchanged." Asshole.

Is ex-actor, creationist, and loud homophobe Kirk Cameron secretly picking up men in Griffith Park in LA?

Here's a little story made up of a collection of .gifs that
happiestsadist sent me. Click through.

The historian and political writer Tony Judt died in 2010 of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig’s disease). His widow, Jennifer Homans, writes a heartbreaking tribute to him: In the two years between diagnosis and death, Judt wrote three books, finishing last one with a co-author while unable to move or breathe on his own.Tony had always cared more about ideas than anything-more than friends; more, in some way, than himself. He believed-really believed-that they were bigger than he was. He wouldn’t survive, but they would. So as he got sicker and sicker, the book mattered-grimly-more and more.
Why shrinks diagnose anti-authoritarians with mental illness. To be clear, I'm pro-psychiatry; I literally couldn't live without antidepressants. But there's no question that psychiatry has been and still is used as a tool of social control.

Finally, again from
mero: Hooray for Iggy Pop.
