It's Tradition.

So a movie trashes New York again. That's twice in two weeks! It'd be facile to say it may have something to do with recent events, but movie makers have been trashing New York in various ways since the first King Kong movie in the 30's.

Cloverfield is pretty much what the trailers imply: Godzilla meets The Blair Witch Project. Although unlike the latter, you get a couple of good looks at the various things chasing you (yes, there's more than one monster, at different ends of the scale.) The movie is entirely about the people caught up in this surreal disaster, and not about the why's and wherefore's of the monster itself. It's also very much filmed in shakeycam (I bet David Stratton hated it!). I've never had a problem with movies shot like this, but I know some are affected with motion sickness, so be warned.

Overall, I liked it. It achieves what it sets out to do, and you do care about the characters. I especially like the rather dopey guy behind the camera. He's endearingly awkward.
