Day Watch is a sequel to the Russian modern fantasy movie Night Watch. I think I've been parsing the phrase wrongly. It's not about who's watching whom, it could be better translated as "Day Shift" and 'Night Shift". Two sets of fairly pragmatic supernatural creatures have decided that one group gets to use its powers during the day, the other at night. While it does seem that the Night Watch have vampires on their side, it doesn't make them all automatically evil. But the plot is basically that the Night Shift want an excuse to go to war with the Day Shift, a war they think they'll win. But if they can't create an excuse, the Organians Mystic Forces will step in against them.
It's been a while since I saw the first movie. Indeed, I was hoping to check my old blog entry on it to refresh my memory, but found I was far less verbose back then. The second movie throws a lot of interesting ideas at the screen, and despite uneven pacing creates an enjoyable world of dark doings and magic in urban Moscow. For the the role-players out there, I'd describe it as if someone's Mage/Vampire campaign ran marvelously out of control. The ending is... rather sudden, and apparently pretty conclusive.
But there's a rumour of a new sequel, and I'm not sure how they're going to manage that.
