This afternoon animal_co and I went to the city Xeriscape lot to check out the best plants to redo our yard with.  Being in the high plains is tricky, and of course, the city requires you to actually HAVE green in your yard.  Our turf has definitely seen better days, despite my continual work, and just isn't recovering.  So we wandered through the paths, took pictures of plants and labels, and generally have a better idea of what works here.

The only bad part is the city lot is much less sheltered than our yard, so many of the grasses are still dormant, and the flowers haven't really come up.  Some of the trees are also just starting to leaf, and are a bit spindly due to the local deer.  We did happen to be there at the same time as a caretaker, so got some good information, and I have names I can look up now.

The good news, is that the city does offer a (minimal) rebate program to help establish drought friendly landscaping.  In a few days I'll get a packet with satellite pics and the yard boundaries for me to plan my proposal.  I then get a free 90 min consultation with a planner to make sure I've got what I need covered, make any changes to the plan, and get approval to start work.  After that I have roughly 3 months to finish the work and apply for my rebate.  We'll be doing the work ourselves, so will get the most out of the rebate system- I'm not hiring someone to do something I CAN do.

I've been putting this off sooo long, and just can't wait to get rid of the dandelion farm our side yard has become!

I'll post pictures of the changes as we go along - so stay tuned. :)
