Finished with what is probably my last still-life of the summer. Registration begins, today, for Fall quarter. I will certainly keep posting other drawings as I will be moving back into painting and am in the middle of planning my next painting but I think I'm done (for now) with exploring glass.

School can't start back up soon enough. I've not been nearly as disciplined as I should have been during my summer break. My live model studies today are nice but they don't look anything like Danni Nidda Thorniley - the one of her mom is close but the ones of Nidda are not. The second one, especially, is way off. Spent about another hour and a half on this and going to leave it alone. It could use some work on the drapery but my main focus was on the glass so, in that respect, I got what I wanted out of it.

Another quick still-life study, this evening. More glass - currently, I'm fascinated by a wee glass decanter that I found at Safeway for a buck. It's got some great curve to it as well as some interesting other bits and pieces.

Since my class got cancelled, I'm going to go ahead and work on composition, via still-life, on my own. This evening's result is a quick still-life study involving glass objects. Today was my first day back to class for this quarter - Foundations of Figure Drawing III. Same six people, which is outstanding as I like them all. Painting Hour, this morning, was actually Drawing Hour. I'm done with the still-life I started yesterday. I wish I'd done it on toned paper with charcoal; I'll never get graphite to get as dark as it needs to be. However, I'm mostly happy with this, as practice pieces go...

I decided to set up my own still-life, mostly because I was looking for something to draw and because I can leave it be for the rest of the week.

Two and a half hours spent on it so far... I like where it's going. I've been very careful and precise about measurement and, now that I am satisfied with that, it's on to working on getting the grey ( Read more... )

I forgot to post this yesterday - this is the fourth session on our final long pose. Four weeks of two days a week on this; probably about five hours into this particular drawing. It's on 18" x 24" paper so it's also fairly large. I'm pleased enough with it that it'll make it into my portfolio. The model was one of the best I've worked with, so far ( Read more... )

I spent the morning finishing my final project for this quarter's Foundations of Figure Drawing class. I've been dreading it because, normally, I don't much like self-portraits. But I applied some Renaissance aesthetic to it and lo! A self-portrait that I actually like.
