Almost seven weeks ago, I started my Summer Paintings project in which I planned to paint a painting a week and concentrate on both composition and execution of each painting. I have been following the Painting-A-Day movement with some interest but didn't feel confident enough to commit to that - a painting a week seemed like a more reasonable goal ( Read more... )

It's been quite awhile since I posted some painting... I've been painting quite a bit and I took classes both this past Fall and this Spring. Nothing during the Winter quarter as I had other things I needed to do and that would have cut into my time. Art Hour, this afternoon, was about more details and some highlight work on the blue wrap. I stopped saying that I was almost done with this because it seemed like it was fighting me about that and now, suddenly, I'm almost finished. I'm getting very close to being satisfied with the faces and other areas of the two figures... Art Hour, this evening, was all about the extremely subtle but easily screw-up-able addition of color and eyebrows to the faces. The Madonna's face is almost there... the baby's needs some more work. Art Hour, this morning, was all about some last fine tuning to the sky and some thoughts on where I am going next, in trying to finish the underpainting. Obviously, I wasn't able to get the underpainting finished by the 15th (although it's super close) but I think I can get it finished by Xmas. Lots of progress, this past week. Last night, Art Hour was all about working on various bits all over the painting, doing some corrections, and laying in the folds of the wrap. I'll probably try to finish the wrap up this week and lay in the rest of the background.

I haven't posted about my Madonna painting in about a month. That's because I had a catastrophic failure with it about two weeks ago and had to abandon it. Which made me incredibly unhappy. However, because I am planning on entering it in KA&S next March, I need to get right back into the project. So, the day after the catastrophe, I cut a new wood ( Read more... )

As with the first study, there's probably more I can do to this but I need to move on and reclaim the studio space. Overall, I am really pleased with this painting. I wish, however, that I had not done it on canvas board - it's a cheap board that is already delaminating. I think it may be possible to pull this off its cardboard backing and then ( Read more... )

The previous layer was finally dry on my Madonna and Child painting so that's what got worked on, during Art Hour, this morning. Predictably, my camera phone is having a hard time photographing this now that a couple of glaze layers are on and I'm starting to lose my shadows and highlights, which is also anticipated.
