Well, busy busy busy. We had our "Barrister's Ball" (read "law school prom") last Friday, sort of a dressy dance thing that is a big deal at other law schools but not so much in SF. It was held at an art gallery / club-type place, which was actually pretty nice, and it quite a bit of fun was had by all, but calling it a "ball" was a little silly. There are huge parts of said law school prom that I don't particularly remember, given that I was drinking way too many gin and tonics that night, complemented by the shots of Jaeger that my friend Stephanie kept throwing down our throats. Slept well that night...
I caught the Prestige the other night and wasn't super impressed. I think it suffered in comparison to The Illusionist (which I liked much more), but even without the period stage magic competition, it's only an alright movie. Part of the problem is that both Batman and Wolverine are essentially dicks in the movie, so there's nothing resembling a protagonist. Everyone involved does a terrific job and David Bowie makes a fun Nikola Tesla, but the movie just felt kind of messy. The backstories of Batman and Wolverine were well constructed and somewhat interesting, but I think the movie could have been edited to be much stronger. It's worth seeing, but I enjoyed the Illusionist much more.
Also caught Marie Antoinette today. It was a little bit of a disappointment as well - much more drama-ey and historical than I expected. There's lots of mostly naked Kirsten Dunst and Jason Schwartzman is terrific as Louis XVI, but the movie left me a little empty. It's sort of an interesting take, but I just didn't feel very fulfilled leaving. It's not as fluffy as I thought, but it's not serious enough to pull off the ultimate seriousness that it seeks to employ (that was a terrible sentence). So, ehhh, I guess.
If there was a better way to go, then it would find me.
