Jennifer and Patrick were still working as a nurse and a fire fighter and now happy to have some time to themselves again, as their youngest son, Paul, had finally left for college. Emma had decided to become a flight attendant because she loved to travel and had met her fiancé, Charles, on the job. The wedding was scheduled for late summer that year.
Jessica was still working in the same hospital as her sister and her husband Steve had gotten a job as a co-trainer at a big college where both their sons, Eric and Daniel had started their career as football players, making their dad really proud. Lilly had married a cop a few years ago and was for now staying at home, awaiting the birth of her and Mitchel’s second daughter.
Following his big sisters into the medical field, Jake had decided to become a doctor and was one of the few gynaecologists who had specialized in male pregnancy while Peter was a high school teacher. They didn’t have any more children after A.J., who had decided to step into his grandfathers’ footsteps and taken a shot at acting after graduating. He had started off with a few modelling jobs and commercials but then had managed to get a lead in a new science-fiction TV show, where he had met his wife, Lisa.
Janie had gone off to college to study journalism and was working at a local newspaper. True to her word she hadn’t had any children but adopted a little girl, named Katie with her husband, Troy, who was a social worker.
Unlike her older sister Julie had unexpectedly decided that she wanted to be a pre-school teacher, married Christopher, who was the headmaster of an elementary school and had three children, who were all in high school by now.
Dean and Sam had both inherited Jensen’s love for photography and therefore opened a successful studio that made shootings for several modelling agencies. They were both still sharing an apartment because neither was ready to move in with their respective girlfriends, yet.
Jensen and Jared had stayed in their huge house even after all their kids had moved out, because there were just too many memories connected to the place and with seven married or engaged children, ten grandchildren with their partners, one great-grandchild and three more on their way, the house never really felt empty.
Having woken up early, Jensen had decided to surprise Jared with breakfast in bed and then a whole day of quality time in the bedroom. He still remembered how it had been Jared who had planned their private celebration of their 25th anniversary that many years ago and what the result of it had been. Now at 85 and 81 years old they certainly weren’t able to make a revival of that night but Jensen would make sure that they both enjoyed their day.
He had just gotten eggs and a mixing bowl out of the cupboards when the phone rang and he immediately leaped toward it to take the call before the ringing woke Jared up. “Hello?”
“Hey, papa.” A.J.’s voice greeted him a little nervously and before Jensen could reply, he went straight to the reason for his early call. “Wake grandpa and get going, Lisa is driving me to the hospital. The babies want out.”
A.J. and Lisa had already tried for a baby a couple of years ago but she had lost the child in her first trimester and both had been through a rough time after the loss. About nine months ago they had decided to give it another try but A.J. had insisted to carry the baby himself, too afraid that something might happen to his wife again. It had taken everybody a bit of getting used to the idea but then Jake had agreed on doing the in vitro fertilization himself, implanting two of Lisa’s fertilized egg cells into his son’s womb.
Jensen’s mouth dropped open at hearing the news. “Isn’t it too early for them?”
“My due date is in two and a half weeks but dad said…” A.J. broke off for a second, breathing deeply, as he was obviously having a contraction. “Eyes on the road, babe!” He hissed to his wife before turning back to the phone. “Well, with twins you’ll never know, right?”
“Right.” Jensen nodded dumbly, already grabbing his coat and keys before he remembered that he needed to wake Jared up first. “I’m gonna wake your grandpa and we’ll be there as soon as we can, Junior”
“Yeah, great.” The father-to-be laughed shakily.
Picking up on his grandson’s nervousness, Jensen tried to calm him down. “Everything’s gonna be okay, Junior. You don’t have to be nervous about it.”
“I know…and that’s not the reason, really.” A.J. started explaining. “I’m just kinda worried that Lisa is gonna drive us into the ditch… Sorry, babe, but please go slower.”
At that revelation Jensen actually had to grin because, as much as he loved his granddaughter-in-law, she really was a terrible driver on a good day and he could only imagine how her current state of mind would add up to her bad driving. “You’ll both be okay. Just try to close your eyes and relax.”
“I’d rather talk to you for a while longer…”
Walking up the stairs to wake Jared, Jensen nodded to himself before he realized that A.J. wouldn’t see him. “Yeah, sure thing. So the contractions probably started tonight, right?” He asked to keep the conversation going and waited for the labored breathing on the other end of the line to even out again.
“Yeah, but I didn’t notice it when I woke up. Lisa drove me over to the studio for my weekly photo shoot and… RED LIGHT, BABE!”
“Does Sam still want to wait until the exhibition next month to show us your pictures?” Jensen asked, curious to see the project his sons’ had been working on. They had decided to make a photo series about pregnancy and asked both A.J. and Lilly if they wanted to model for them but Lilly had been too shy to say yes. A.J. had went to weekly shootings right after the in vitro fertilization and even given copies of his ultrasounds, which were also taken regularly to shown the development of the babies, to his cousins for the planned exhibition.
“I guess so but I’m more worried that Dean is gonna kill me because I ruined that damn Persian rug in the studio when my water broke.” A.J. sighed. “And I think that Sam kept snapping pictures until I had my clothes back on.”
“Don’t worry about that, Junior, I’m gonna talk to both of them.” Jensen assured and went over to the bed to shake Jared’s shoulder.
Jared rolled over sleepily, voice still slurred from sleep. “Wha’s up, Jen?”
“Get up and dressed, Junior’s having the babies.” Jensen dropped the bomb and watched his husband sober up and bolt upright instantly.
“Who’s on the phone?” He asked his eyes searching the room for his clothes.
Jensen smiled. “Can you say hi to your grandpa just so he won’t freak out on me? Great.” He held the phone out to his husband.
“Hey, kiddo, how’re you holding up?” Jared asked worriedly.
“I’m fine and I can already see the clinic up ahead.” The twenty-four-year-old replied calmly. “Aunt Jenny is already waiting outside with a wheelchair. See you in a few?”
“Sure, kiddo. We’ll be there ASAP. We love you.” Jared shot back and ended the call, tossing the phone onto the bed to get ready.

Twenty minutes later Jensen and Jared were at Jake’s clinic and putting on the ugly blue gown and hats before they could enter the delivery room.
“I told you we wanted a natural birth, dad!” A.J. glared at his father. He was lying back against the bed with his feet in the stirrups and a green paper towel spread over his lower half.
“Let it go Jake, he’s doing great.” Jenny, who was holding her nephew’s right hand, while Lisa was at his left side, told her brother.
Jake just shook his head in frustration clearly more nervous about the birth than his own son was at the moment. “It’s twins, Alex, there might be complication and it would be better if…”
“I’m NOT changing my mind!” The pregnant man shouted, scrunching up his face with the next contraction. “Papa had Dean and Sam at home without medical help AT ALL!”
“That was because we were snowed in and…” Jake started to argue.
Jessi was sitting on a swivel chair right between A.J.’s legs and broke off the argument. “Guess it’s too late to change any minds, guys. He’s fully dilated and I’m seeing some blond hair here.” She announced cheerfully to everyone in the room.
Walking over to his sister to assess the progress of his son’s labor, Jake noticed that his dads had just arrived. “Hey…”
Jared clapped his son on the shoulder and nodded at his grandson from where he was trying not to stand in anyone’s way, while Jensen took Jenny’s position at A.J.’s side. “Hey, Junior. You still alright?” He gave Lisa and the other a quick smile and clasped his grandson’s clammy hand in his.
“I’m okay.” A.J. replied a little tired but nonetheless sounding convincing.
Lisa seemed to be too anxious and nervous to say anything to her husband, looking really pale in contrast to him, so Jensen started talking to his grandson to keep him as relaxed as possible. “How’s the pain?”
A.J. flinched at the next contraction but didn’t even make a sound, completely concentrating on breathing through the pain before he answered. “I can deal.” He gave Jensen and then his wife a small smile but then scrunched his face up and grunted deeply.
“Babe?” Lisa asked terrified by seeing her husband like that and Jenny moved to her side to lay an arm around the younger woman.
“You can start pushing, Alex.” Jake told his son, all anger forgotten again as he saw his boy straining against the stirrups to push with the pain. “That’s good, keep going, Alex. Keep going…”
As the contraction eased off, A.J. sagged back breathing heavily. “Now THAT… feels weird…” He panted.
“I know, Junior, but it’s not gonna be much longer now.” Jensen promised calmly and carded his finger through his grandson’s spiky hair.
“Hope they got the memo! FUCK!” A.J. groaned and started pushing hard once more, wanting to get this whole active labor thing over with as fast as possible.
Jake’s eyes widened in surprise and awe when he saw the small head slowly slipping free as his son started bearing down again. “That’s good, Alex. You’re doing great.” He carefully pushed the skin back around the first baby’s head. “The head is crowned and almost out, keep pushing if you can.” Another low groan echoed through the room and the rest of the head emerged. “Deep breath and get ready to push again. Let’s find out if it’s a boy or girl.”
“Here it comes…” A.J. warned, gritting his teeth as he gathered his strength to push the baby out of his sore body. “Oh God!”
“You have a son, Alex.” Jake exclaimed proudly. He looked at the small wailing boy for a moment and felt his eyes water before he passed him into Jessi’s waiting arms. “You’re doing great.” He gently rubbed the inside of his son’s blood splattered thigh. “Can you give me another tentative push with the next pain? I can’t see her head, yet.”
No matter how exhausted A.J. was, he still heard his dad’s slip-up. “Her? The second baby’s a girl?”
“Just a few more minutes and we’ll find out, Junior.” Jensen soothed, shooting his son an annoyed look for not watching his tongue better. “Take even breaths and see if you can help to move the other baby down.”
“We’re having a boy and a girl.” A.J. turned his head toward his wife, who had tears trailing down her pale cheeks. “Baby, what’s wro… Argh!”
Jake patted his son’s leg again. “The baby’s moving down. You’re doing great… The head’s…”
“OUT!” The pregnant man’s face turned red as he started pushing hard. He yelped out as the baby’s head crowned and fluidly slipped free.
“It’s okay, Alex. It’s almost over just one more strong push.” Jenny encouraged her nephew after taking a quick, assessing look between his thighs and noticing that Jake already had tears in his eyes. “That’s it. One… two… three… four… the shoulder’s coming out… five… six… There you go.” She bent forward and caught the baby, not sure if her brother would have reacted quickly enough. “You have a beautiful baby girl.”
After watching his oldest daughter take his new granddaughter away to clean her up, Jared finally dared to move closer to his family. “Congratulations, kiddos.” He stepped up next to Jensen and kissed A.J.’s forehead and then Lisa’s, as she had sat down on the stool next to her husbands bed and was resting her head against his shoulder.

Ten minutes later Jensen and Jared stepped out into the waiting area which was crowded with the rest of their family, all waiting to see A.J., Lisa and their babies.
Jared smiled brightly at everyone and felt Jensen grasping his hand before he announced. “You can all go inside to meet Jensen Tristan and Rachel Leigh but please take it easy on A.J. for now.
Jensen felt his heart swell wide joy and pride as he watched his gathered family, waiting to meet the two newest additions to the Ackles-Padalecki clan. The last half decade had had its ups and downs but wouldn’t be anywhere else than where he was in that precise moment with the love of his life right by his side and their whole family around them.
