MPizzablog presents Justa's 01/09/09 Sal's Special pizza

Okay - this pizza is from Sals Pizza.  www.sals-pizza.com  They advertise as being from Boston's north end...they have stores all throughout New Hampshire & Massachusetts.  There are even a couple in California for whatever reason...maybe someone trying to find warmer weather I suspect.  We ordered the Sal's Special.  It includes Sal's Pizza sauce, shredded mozzarella, mushrooms, peppers, onions, pepperoni and black olives.

The sauce tastes like any homemade pizza sauce with a definite flavor of fresh tomatoes, garlic, basil, oregano.  The crust also tastes homemade and in our restaurant was fired in what looked like a brick oven.  (I am not sure if this is the case or if it is the same in other stores)  The crust has the taste of a fresh yeast roll, yet with a crunchy outer crust with a soft middle.

There was adequate cheese for the type of pizza and there was plenty of veggies & pepperoni (which was not greasy at all).  The slice you see on the plate is how you buy it at lunch - a "slice" as they call it is $2.99 for cheese and a few extra cents for additional toppings.  They want you to hold it in the middle and eat it like a sandwich, but coming from the Midwest, this is foreign to me.  Tho I do not use a fork, I find it a bit challenging for the first couple bites to get it to a reasonable hand holding size.  For this reason they cut the "slice" partially down the middle so it is easier to break apart upon your plate but it is still very long.

The other photo shows the box and the size of the pizza w/ the measuring tape.  Tho the side that the photo turned out shows the pizza @ 17" measuring on the other side was 19"...the size they advertise for their pizza, tho because they toss the pizza by hand I do not demand that all sides be "19 inches."  There is also a side view to show how thin the pizza is...it is not soft like you think it would be due to the brick oven cooking.  It holds up nicely.

This pizza also reheats nicely - tho I recommend doing so in the oven otherwise it will become mushy - but it was a nice second meal!  Sal's Special & delivery in the Nashua area is $16.25 plus tip if you are so inclined.  Since we live a few miles away - we of course went and picked it up. A plain cheese pizza - which I have had for lunch is quite tasty also and is $10.99 for a 19".
