Oscars 2007

Well, the show just ended. It was definately more entertaining than last year because there were a lot more surprises in certain categories this time around. Just thought I'd share some random thoughts, both bad and good...

THE BAD

*The fact that "Children of Men" not only got left out of the nominations for Best Picture, Director and Actor, but also didn't get a single award during the show. It's almost criminal.

*Jennifer Hudson is an Oscar winner. This will never stop bugging me. Ever. Any of the other four nominees were far more worthy, especially Adriana Barraza for "Babel".

*Ellen was only a mediocre host. I usually like her and find her quite funny, but she's not meant to be an Oscar host. Plus, she didn't even have a brilliantly funny montage of movie clips like Billy Crystal.

*Kate Winslet remains 0 for 5. Here's hoping that she will win one year when there isn't already a Best Actress forerunner.

THE GOOD

*Marty Scorsese is AT LAST an Oscar winner. Although "The Departed" is not as brilliant as "Raging Bull", he still deserved this award more than anyone else. He had it coming and it was just his year to shine. What an adorable little man.

*"The Departed" won for Best Picture. Thank god! From the moment I saw it in theatres back in October I knew it would remain my favourite film of the year and kept hoping it would win the Oscar. All five films that were nominated were all fantastic and deserving, but this one topped them all.

*Congrats to the luminous Helen Mirren and Forrest Whittaker. I'm happy for both of them. :) As for Alan Arkin, I don't think he deserved the Oscar, but I can't hold it against him because at least he beat Eddie Murphy.

*The Honourary Oscar montage for composer Ennio Morricone was lovely. I was disappointed they didn't give a musical clip for "Cinema Paradiso" but his speech, in Italian, was moving and sweet.

RANDOM COMMENTS

*Mark Wahlberg has one of cutest smiles on the face of this earth. He seemed to be having a great time. Yay for his nomination!

*I loved that Abigail Breslin and Will Smith's son presented an award together. They were so adorable.

*Kate Winslet, Helen Mirren and Cate Blanchett were smokin'. Those are three beautiful women.

*I'm glad that Peter O'Toole decided to show up. I hope that he wins an Oscar one day.

*James McAvoy, the young Scottish actor who appeared in "The Last King of Scotland"...holy shit that is one sexy accent on him. Made me swoon. A lot. lol.

*I was happy to see Gael Garcia Bernal present an award. Plus, I noticed Diego Luna was in the audience.

*I still haven't seen "Pan's Labyrinth" but it looks magnificent and I look forward to seeing it in the coming weeks.
