Under what circumstances, if any, is it okay to break the law?

post-Hogwarts

I believe everything has a proper time and place - under certain sets of circumstances, rules must be broken. I do presently work for the Ministry of Magic so it’s highly unlikely that I would do something with legal repercussions at this moment. But, there have been moments when I’ve been placed in situations where the wrong answer is the only right one. When Voldemort returned, a lot of laws and rules were absolutely tossed out the window, because they had to be. We were children, fighting a grown-up war, and you can’t maintain every rule in the book during that.

It wasn’t so long ago, not really. I doubt highly that the memories will ever fade completely. I remember that moment just before I placed a charm on my parents to change their identities and memories; I couldn’t sit there and let them be killed, they didn’t have powers or any way of defending themselves. It wasn’t the right answer, but it was the best one at the time. They came home, safe and sound, and the end result is what matters. That year was so painful but necessary - there wasn’t a way to avoid it, to sit back and be uninvolved, and truly, I wouldn’t have wanted it that way. We didn’t go to Hogwarts for our seventh year. We spent the year running, chasing horcruxes, trying to both avoid and end trouble at the same time. I could easily go through the books here and compile a list of things that were done that we had no choice about. My parents had this little pun they used to say when I was little, a pun because they’re dentists - in a bad situation, we’re all like wee tubes of toothpaste; when squeezed, the real version of ourselves comes out.

The war is over. There are far more inexcusable things done by Voldemort - things we can’t go back and change, people who were killed for no reason whatsoever. I did what was necessary, and if a dark time such as that should come again, I would break whatever laws that had to be broken, with no hesitation. We’ve all grieved and worked so endlessly to start anew, and I truly believe that no wizard like Voldemort will ever come to such power again. But if it happens, then it would be perfectly okay to break the law.
