I think somewhere, deep in the flamer's subconscious, they realize that they are jealous, moronic bums that couldn't write a fic well on their own. They flame other people because their first reaction is not through careful analysis of the story itself, but through whether or not they actually enjoyed it.
Authors give concrit because we know how helpful that can be.
If a flamer signs their review, you could go to their profile and see that they haven't written anything themselves/don't have the proper grammar to write a decent bio page.
Why thank you! I spent a lot of time considering this myself, and was forced to come to that very conclusion ...
Flames are icky any time you get them. To me, it's insulting not because they were particularly intelligent, but moreso just because someone didn't like what I wrote.
I'm more prone to finding them insulting because they (or most of them) have the nerve to insult me when they can't even spell or use proper grammar. *Shudders*
I once got a flame that was longer than the actual fic... it was about 1038 words or so. The most idiotic thing about it was, that the flamer sent exactly the same flame to various authors. ¬_¬ I'll see if I can find it... it was quite funny, actually.
I think it might be in my mailbox... Yep, here it is.
...damn, it's too long. I totally forgot how funny the ending is:

That's just my opinion, anyway. *nods sagely*

Plus, I really don't see why they bother with me, especially, since all I do is laugh at them. Tsu.

Idiots.
I don't think I've ever actualy flamed, but just made notes about grammar and spelling stuff, you know?
Anyways, I hope you get a kick out of them. Just imagine what professional authors think about reviewers.
