A little late on my volunteering update...
Hey that rhymed!! That's just too exciting!! hehe :P
Anyway, I meant to update yesterday and had plenty of time...but forgot.
Volunteering was good again yesterday. I watched a lesson and then watched some guided reading. The lesson was on a book that the teacher was reading outloud. I only heard the second half of the book, but I got the gist of it. It was SOOOO sad, I was like ready to cry :P There was this man and he was a hunchback but a really good person (like beauty and the beast-ish sort of) and there was this woman and she's friends with him but then falls in love with him but never tells him. And he's in love with her too but never tells her because of course he thinks he's too ugly and all that, and then he goes off and saves all these people in a war battle but ends up dying. It's so sad!!! But yeah moving on...the kids had to write a page about what they thought about the book. Very open-ended writing assignment.
So during writing, the teacher took two reading groups. The first one is going to be reading "Bunnicula" by James Howe!!!! I read that as a child and it's such a funny book!! So that was cool. The other group was doing a non-fiction book about bats. In both groups, the teacher was simply introducing the schema around each book. The kids read the books independently on their own at home and then come back and do lessons at school.
So enough about that anyway :P Last night we went out for Cassandra's birthday!!! Cassie (duh), Julia, Kristen, Severson and I went to A Taste of India in Mystic for dinner. It was soooo good. I ate my whole meal plus a piece of bread...it was crazy. But I was really, really super hungry so it's OK :P Then we went to Applebees for drinks. We had a hilarious waiter!! He entertained us, hehe. Cassie and I got this weird thing called a "chocolate martini." It's nothing like a martini. It's just in a martini glass :P Anyway, it was REALLY strong. I could hardly even finish it :P It wasn't bad but I'm not sure I'd get it again :P
After that, we returned to campus for cake! Cuz we needed to eat more, lol. Man I was so stuffed last night it was ridiculous. But it was JUlia's mom's pumpkin cake and it's sooo good! So we had the cake and Cassie opened her presents, which she seemed to really like so yay!!
Then it was time for Julia's shift at the Coffee Grounds. I hung out with her and Eric Schluessel, and later Cassie and Severson caught up with us. Then we all decided to watch one of Eric's DVDs. We decided on "Clerks." It was pretty funny, but I found the ending to be unsatisfactory.
I don't know what was with me last night. I was falling asleep during the movie. Literally. It was a fight to keep my eyes open. And that after I had gotten over nine hours of sleep the night before AND taken a nap during the afternoon! I was also cold, so I worried I was getting sick, but I feel fine today.
I got up, and, feeling fine and still full from the night before, decided it was a good idea to go running. Which it was. I felt better after that! I had a very productive afternoon. And I bought a plant!!! There was a plant sale in Cro, and being that I had two empty flower pots in my room...hehe. I got a cool mini-palm tree thing and it fits quite well in my little flower pot :) I am happy!
And this evening Ben is coming down again so that's exciting! Should continue to be a good weekend :)
