∗facepalm∗ Who'd have thought this would still be an issue nine years later? Maybe the next time Synaptic won't start after a crash, I'll remember first to tail .xsession-errors because there is no error log for Synaptic, and then sudo update-apt-xapian-index, instead of jumping through useless remove/purge/reinstall hoops first!

My desktop machine finally got fixed a couple of months ago, and yet somehow I never noticed until today that I had failed to reinstall my avast! antivirus. Ok, no problem; even though it's not in any Ubuntu repositories that I know of, I have the linux download page bookmarked...

...because I saw somewhere that you could use LogJam to post to Dreamwidth...

[EDIT] ...aaaaand, it works! No way to access the Age Restriction setting, though, sadly, and my journal default of "Access List" for security trumps setting "Public" with LogJam.

The next time I decide to wipe and reinstall my distro, at least now I know that my wifi connections are stored in /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/ so I can back them up and restore them instead of having to recreate them one by painful one ( Read more... )

I really should remember to check my LJ configuration tag when I can't remember how I fixed stuff in previous installs.

I should also remember to record those little fixes, like this one for avast! antivirus:
