Is there a big public library in Montreal?

I tried to visit the website, but it didn't prove to be very helpful. ...Most cities have some sort of large MAIN BRANCH-- where is it here? And does anyone know if memberships cost money, and what might be needed for the membership (as far as ID, etc)?

Any other library tips?

Can anyone provide a list of the Montreal libraries that are open to Montreal residents? Côte-St-Luc and Mt-Royal library are closing their membership to local residents because of the demerger and I need to find myself a good source of English books.
