The damage wrought by Sandy is insidious. I like that word. Central New Jersey appears bright and cheery in the sunshine, but so many people are dealing with power outages and damage to their homes, trying to get around without traffic lights and avoiding streets closed off by downed trees and power lines.
We had Bryant's future in-laws over for dinner last night and invited them to bring their cell phones and chargers with them. They've been without power (heat, lights, and water since they have a well and the pump isn't working) since Monday. Such a nice warm visit. Patti had sat in line at a gas station for two hours pre-dawn, only to find out that the station wasn't opening. A good Samaritan friend managed to get her tank filled later in the day without further hassle. I can't imagine -- but my heart aches for everyone in this situation, and they are legion.
A friend came over for a hot meal and a shower on Tuesday. My kids and I have remained safe and warm throughout. I'm feeling very blessed and very grateful for the luxuries we sometimes take for granted.
