A small disappointment

I'm so excited! I'll be retiring on June 30 after 25 years as bookkeeper in our small school district. There are only a couple of people ineligible for union membership in our district because of "confidential" status -- my friend, Holly, with 23 years, is the other one. We've both handled payroll and benefits for ALL the school's employees for all these years, and we're known to be friendly and helpful (with all due humility) to everyone. One of the teachers is also retiring on the same date, and the school has a Party Committee to handle the retirement party. I was informally asked if our send-offs could be combined, and though I never wanted a party it seemed sociable to agree. This was a few weeks ago.

I found out today that the union voted last week NOT to include non-union personnel in their celebrations (we can be invited, but not honored). So basically, even though it would add no cost to the party...wow. I'm disappointed in their decision, but not crushed. Disillusioned, but not upset. How very small of them. Our school motto is "One School, One Community." Humbug. The other retiree is very upset; I'll give her a call tonight. She's a 40-year friend, and I feel badly for her -- but I won't be going. She'll understand.
