What I Did This Summer

Sep 10, 2007 11:05

Summer may not officially be over, but the high school in my neighborhood is full and bustling, I had to put on a light sweater for the walk to the bus stop this morning, and the sun is going down before 8pm ... so that summer feeling is definitely on it's way out. In tribute to a wonderful summer ...

Trips:
May 25-28: Memorial Day party on our property in Southern Illinois
June 8-18: Midwest road trip (Akron for Jill & Kevin's Wedding, a few days with friends in Chambana, and Bonnaroo in Tennessee)
July 1-7: Reskusich family vacation in Colorado

Concerts:
June 14-17: Bonnaroo (Rodrigo Y Gabriella, The National, Ziggy Marley, Ben Harper, Tool, The Police, Regina Spektor, The Nightwatchman ... I missed a lot of good stuff there this year, due to scheduling problems)
June 31: Xavier Rudd at the Showbox (an amazing show!)
July 4: The Violent Femmes and Blues Traveller at Red Rocks (another amazing show!)
August 15: The Be Good Tanyas and Old Crow Medicine Show at the Zoo
September 1: Bumbershoot (The Shins, The Gourds, and Gogol Bordelo ... again, I missed a few bands I would have liked to have seen, but these three were really good, especially the Shins.)

Books I read:
Thud, by Terry Pratchett
Don't Get Too Comfortable, by David Rakoff (audiobook)
Angry Black White Boy, by Adam Mansbach
The Yiddish Policeman's Union, by Michael Chabon
Holidays on Ice, by David Sedaris
Artist of the Floating World, by Kazuo Ishigiro
jPod, by Douglas Coupland

Movies I saw:
Pirates of the Carribean III
Knocked-up (loved it)
Waitress (regret having seen it)
Hot Fuzz
Zodiac
Bridge to Terabithia (Loved it!)
The Number 23
28 Weeks Later
Breach
The Lives of Others (loved it)
Live Free or Die Hard (loved it)
Sunshine (loved it)
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
Stardust
3:10 To Yuma

Camping Trips:
May 25-28: 26th Annual Memorial Day Party campout
June 15-18: Bonnaroo
July 28-29: With Sze-lyn, Mark, & Ray in the northwest quarter of Mount Rainier National Park
August 11-12: With Ray and Riley at the North Cascades National Park
(September ? I will camp at least once more this year)

Hikes:
June 11: Allerton Park with Gen, Keith, & Ray
July 2: Boulder Mountain Park, near Bolder Colorado, with Ray, John, and Tony
July 5: Rocky Mountain (summit) and Pike's Peak (partial) with Ray
July 28: Mowich Lake through Spray Park to Seattle Park in northwest Mt. Rainier National Park with Sze-lyn, Mark, & Ray
July 29: Mowich Lake to Tolmie Peak Lookout in northwest Mt. Rainier National Park with Sze-lyn, Mark, & Ray
September 2: Wallace Falls trail with Gen, Keith, & Ray

Weddings:
May 19: Tim & Beth
June 9: Jill & Kevin

Sad Things:
Riley has been sick on and off, causing us worry and stress and fear for his health. Currently, though, he seems to be doing pretty good.
Tunji Toogun died suddenly in a horrible accident. I can't write anymore about that here.

New Experiences:
- I competed in my first Triathlon and it was amazing. It was one of the most fun things I've done in a long time and can't wait to do it again.
- I cut off my hair. For the first time in my life, I have chosen short hair. The weirdest part is how not-weird it feels. See: Front and Back
- I went to Denver, Boulder, Golden, & Colorado Springs. I'd been through Colorado before, but never to any of those cities.

Visitors to Seattle:
May 24 & June 3 & 4: tskirvin & elisafyre
August 31 - Sept. 3: Gen & Keith
Sept. 9: Ann & Nick
