sushi...i made it!

i saw someone who made bacon & egg sushi awhile back on one of my foodie communities, and it not only sounded delicious but seemed like something i could actually make myself. i've heard making sushi isn't that hard, but i think the mad fish slicing skills and presentation that go with sushi (and well, just having fish that fresh) have made it seem...beyond my skills. there's a certain...mystique that surrounds it?

plus, i have issues with pouring vinegar over anything...

i'm missing a box of stuff that i brought from home, which has important things in it like my tamagoyaki pan, mirin, and my bamboo mat... so i used wax paper and a regular frying pan, which made it not quite as exciting. though i think for my first time, it didn't turn out to bad looking (maybe too thick?) - and it tasted good! ^_^

i'm just generally proud of this bento in general ^_^'''

I bought rice labeled "sushi rice" at the grocery store, and for only being medium grain (as opposed to short grain), it sure came out sticky. but sticky is good. ^_^ i heated 3 tablespoons of rice vinegar, 2 tablespoons sugar, and 1 teaspoon salt and then mixed it with 2 cups of the sushi rice. the vinegar smell about killed me (have i mentioned i don't like vinegar?) so i ended up only using 2/3 of the vinegar mixture in the rice. it tasted fine to me. ^_^

i spread the rice thinly on the nori and then placed green onion, egg strips, and bacon in the middle. i moistened the far end of the nori with water and then used the waxed paper to help roll everything up. i got this:

haha, they look like seaweed sausages

a little bit cooler looking from the side

and a picture of the whole thing wrapped up, because i was so pleased with it ^_^'''

anyways, the sushi tasted pretty good, in my opinion
