The Beast/fairytale lore (B&tB, a little of this story, a little of that, most of it NOT Disney)/bar

If it should happen that you look up, and chance to see the very large animal that comes down the stairs, standing stiffly upon his hind legs (going down stairs always gave him just a touch of trouble. Not that he would admit it) and wearing a very finely tailored suit, with particular attention to the waistcoat, do not be alarmed. He may be ugly, ( Read more... )

DG catches a glimpse of the rather large animal with even larger teeth in the corner, and to her surprise, he's eating cookies.

It's certainly not something one sees every day.

She's debating over whether or not to get closer, but for now, she'll just observe.

If the cookies don't get you, try this on for size: an oversized paw, which somehow manages to be shaped just so as to actually be capable of manual usage, has picked up a teacup (rather dainty, fine china) and he is sipping from it.

He's also wearing really expensive clothing from a very very very long time ago. At least, compared to her time.

She's never seen anything like this in her entire life. Granted, being from Kansas, she hasn't seen very many things in her life.

So forgive her for staring.

Oh, it's perfectly alright. Staring is perhaps the least rude thing that someone could do to the Beast.

He does notice, eventually. Those odd animal senses come in handy occasionally.

A polite nod goes her way.

DG can't help herself, she smiles and returns the nod, lifting the mug of tea she's currently sipping from in acknowledgment.

There's something about this animal - this beast - that catches her curiosity, but she tears her eyes away, setting her tea down and absently stirs it with a spoon.

The Narration can't possibly imagine what could be interesting about this Beast, what with the tea and the cookies and the finery and his extremely-well mannered everything. He's a very polite and genteel Beast, he is. Not to mention that he doesn't look like any known animal on Earth. And those eyes are not the icy blue you would see on a dog.

Admittedly returning his own share of interest - he likes when people smile at him - he waits to see if she will look back at him.

If she does, there might be raised eyebrows and an offered plate of cookies.

Seriously, who can resist the cookies. And he always has them. Such a terrible sweet tooth, our Beast has.

It's altogether a very intriguing package, and DG is nothing more than a young waitress from Kansas (so she thinks), so when she sees something as unique as he is, it's hard for her not to study him.

So she glances up from her tea until her gaze catches both raised eyebrows and the plate handed out to her.

She can't resist the latter, so she slides down off her stool, still carrying her tea, and takes a cookie off the plate.

"Thanks," she murmurs.

A terrible sound, exceedingly polite as it may be, answers. "You are most welcome, Mmse."

He takes the study with good humour.

DG jumps a little at the tone of his voice, but his words are polite, and she doesn't think twice before taking a seat near the armchair.

Taking a bite of the cookie, she understands why he has a whole plate of them - they are good, and washing it down with a sip of tea only serves to relax her further.

Her company is greatly appreciated. That is simply the best thing about Milliways. He can find company.

You will pardon him if his sip of tea takes longer than hers. It does require a certain fair amount of manipulation.

Pardoned and admired, actually.

She's still trying to figure out how he's worked out all the maneuvers it takes to hold a teacup in his rather massive paws. Not to mention sipping from it with his somewhat large teeth.

Practice.

He does, at least, have a sufficient lower lip to help with the matter.

Also, an impressive lack of slurping.

She puts her tea down for a moment, and then decides that the next step, since they're sharing cookies and all, is to introduce herself.

So she does.

"Hi, by the way. I'm DG."

A quasi-stiff partial bow from his seated position. "It is a pleasure to meet you, Mmse DG." Something about the way he says it makes the often-trite saying an immense compliment. Absolutely sincere without that creepy factor. "I am the Beast. You may also call me Charles, if you wish."

A beast with manners, nonetheless. The half-bow earns a smile, and the words, despite the tone of his voice, cause it to grow.

"I'll have to figure out which one I like better, then," DG says, nodding decisively.

One would hope so, given his previous social status. But she doesn't know that.

"Whatever your wish, Mmse." Oh, keep smiling. Please. It does so make him happy.
