This morning I finished up the Goggle Holder and took pics. I'm adding it to Etsy once I finish this post!
Cut for the sake of the Uninterested
Named for pulp sci-fi writer Howard Phillips Lovecraft. I wanted to keep the name understated and subtle while still evoking a bit of the Lovecraftian Mythos. There are no tentacles, no staring eyes or gills, but a green tone is prevalent in the hardware and wood. I'm making a more ornate version called 'The Innsmouth' that will be a bit more explicit with the seafloor and oceanic imagery, but I liked how spare this one turned out. Heh, maybe the next project would be figuring out woodworking so I can make one with Non-Euclidean geometry! Given my habit of ignoring rulers and measurements that sort of happens anyway.
One problem with a Victorian theme is it lends itself to overkill so easily: I could have glued beads and all kinds of embellishments all over this thing--not that it would have been a bad thing, and in fact is my next plan-- but ultimately this is a functional piece, made to hold and support something else. I didn't want the coaster outshining the coffee cup.
The wood backing was purchased from AC Moore, sanded, stained and decoupaged the edge with tissue paper instead of the thicker card stock I used last time. I really like how the edging came out, it looks almost like a jade inset. The gears again were black plastic, never used, but were painted with bronze and metallic green paint. THey're screwed on instead of glued this time, so they move (and the teeth kind of intersect) but again serve no purpose other than decoration. The chain was just a bit of jewelry chain I relinked to fit the piece. The brass bit in the center was just a bit of metal I got from Skycraft which I primed with the brand of primer I usually use for miniatures. I primed it in white, painted it dark gold, then went over it with the green to tinge it. I like how the whole piece turned out, makes me think of sodden things hauled up from the seafloor!
A detail of the gears. I love how the colored layers came out! Got to figure out a way to Make some kind of jewelry or something out of them! I really like working with these plastic gears, they're easy to paint and so cheap!
Detail of how the goggles are handing on the conduit. I've bent one of the conduits 'teeth' out so that it gently clamps the ball-chain on these goggles. In future I have much smaller conduits to use, which are smaller both in diameter and length. I really like how the brass viridesces, and brings out the green.
These are my Granddaddy's welding goggles that I've been going on and on about, and they are not now, nor will ever be for sale, or included in this holder. Thine goggles thy must avail thyself of. Ye shan't have mine. You can't tell from the pic, but the lenses are smoked glass, so when you look through them you have a near-perfect dark image, and light-flares are tone down immensely. Obviously your goggles aren't to be tossed in a drawer, where they may be scratched and tangled; hence my idea for goggle and jewelry racks!
You can also hang'em by the strap, obviously. These are Nathan's Restoration Hardward goggles. I borrowed the strap to use to hang my Granddaddy's goggles, since they don't have a permanent strap yet. The idea to dress his pair up a bit has been inthe back of my mind for a while, but I have a lot of other stuff I'm working on. And they're his anyway, don't want to fiddle with what's not mine!
Detail of the hardware, and the green of the brass conduit is a lot more noticeable.
And that's the 3rd attempt! I've got a lot better idea of what to do and what not to do in future. The next caddy (because if nothing else, it keeps me busy on the weekend!) will be an actual jewelry holder with small multiple hooks. It'll also more decorated and ornate than this piece, I got some GORGEOUS beads and little decorative bits today while I was out rattling around.
It's so fortuitous my bathroom has a . . .whatever that wallpaper strip is called that goes around the room at eye-level, thus breaking up an otherwise stark white wall. Border? Meh, whatever. And that it matches my Goggle holder in color and theme so well. That just sort of happened, honestly.
Anyway, I'm totally going to find a cheeseburger right now. Happy Saturday, y'all!
And just in case you're curious, here's my Etsy shop, complete with a crappy banner I made myself! (It'll change once I get a better font)
