I watch a fashion-based community that focuses on fatties. There was a link this morning to this article and various angry responses to it. The poster included the author's email.
At first, I read it and I was mad. FURIOUS. Fully prepared to write the most seething, thinly veiled Rage Kvetch in the history of kvetching. Then, I was like...wait. Marie Claire? Really? And I re-read the article. And the first couple of pages of responses.
And it became obvious...that it was CLEARLY PUBLISHED SIMPLY TO ELICIT A RESPONSE.
Then I was sad.
I am not sorry that the author got an inbox full of ragemail. I am sorry that the intern who screens that inbox will read these messages aloud in the Marie Claire office, make fun of them, then delete them. A lot of intelligent people wasted a lot of time and words on a nasty marketing ploy by a vapid publication that regularly profits from people's insecurities.
I am sorry so many people took your bait, Marie Claire. It's so hard not to; I mean, LOOK AT IT. It's just BEGGING for it.
