Remember how JUST YESTERDAY I was talking about wanting to do a Men In Make-up pic spam? But was waiting for Johnny to do something HQ?
As you'll recall this picture:
Reminded me of my love of men in make-up. It's not so much that he looks yum-yum hot or anything, but he does look like an other worldly being. I cannot get it out of my head that he looks like a vampire living in Weimar Republic era Germany who would later evince disgust at another World War and wander over to France to aid the Resistance by eating Nazis.
Anyway that picture reminded me of how much I love Johnny wearing make-up:
But I couldn't find the right picture. All I had to go on was some low quality pics of him in skating exhibitions where his make up was done semi-hastily and meant to be removed. Previously favorite example of Johnny in make up was his "Heartbroken" performance where he had this lovely smokey eye make-up juxtaposed with with this simple black outfit. In a lot of other examples he paired make up with a feminine outfit and sort of looked like a wealthy dowager socialite. Pretty, just not my cuppa.
This however:
TOTALLY MY CUPPA. He's the love child of Ziggy Stardust and Lady Gaga. Everything is to the Nth degree, I know, from the costume to the red lips to the paleness, but I don't care. Sure he looks insane (or maybe just tacky) but that's what makes it satisfying. He's slipping beyond mere mortal territory an into a no-man's land of fabulousness.
Prior to Johnny I was into the virtuous Jonas Brothers, and the uber-manly Winchester Brothers, but before those two make-up bereft fandoms I was sort of into Lukas Rossi:
Lukas is a total fall down mess. Genuinely gift song writer who makes the WORST CHOICES. Ugh. But I really, really liked that he insisted on rocking make-up for every single performance of a viewer-vote driven contest show in America. He did it two years before Adam Lambert did and (by virtue of being chosen by the band he was auditioning for and not the public) actually won.
For pictures of Adam rocking make-up see
my thread with Smithereen from yesterday
Before Lukas Rossi was Hedwig and the Angry Inch:
I am obsessed with this movie. And obsessed with the song "Origin of Love." And obsessed with the make-up John Cameron Mitchell wore in the scene. His lipstick is made of actual glitter. And he's so over the top (the eyebrows, the hair) while being still GORGEOUS. It's not just drag and it's not just glam and it's not trying to pass. It's just magic.
Before Hedwig there was Velvet Goldmine, but I can't find a picture of the make-up and costumes in that movie that I like. I'm just going to hope you have all seen that movie. Because my God, you should have.
Before Velvet Goldmine there was Boy George:
Who is not someone I find attractive, but as a little girl I found him kind of fascinating. I was too young to remember him being really popular, but when I was in elementary and I looked back at the music/pop culture of a few years ago, I was like, "Wait what? He's a boy? Why is he wearing those funny clothes and looking like a girl?" Then I forgot about him until his VH1 Behind the Music came out when I was just getting into fictional slash and there was the he said/she said about whether or not he was involved with his bandmate and I was very "OMG! REAL LIFE SLASH! WHAT IS THIS ABOUT?" Lols.
And of course, before Boy George, there was Ziggy Stardust/David Bowie:
::lovestruck sigh::
Ingredients: Johnny, Lance, Lukas Rossi, Hedwig, Boy George, Ziggy, and trace amounts of pointless rambling.
eta: OH man. I'm embarrassed. I didn't mean to post all those pics without a cut. I had no idea I had done it while drafting. ::red face!::
