Ianto and Gwen sat in the waiting room of the Gwent Royal hospital. Gwen, for a change, had gotten them both coffees from the venting machine. They sat in their awkward silence which Gwen was becoming quite accustomed too. Although she did wonder how Jack could spend so much time alone with Ianto without going out of his mind.
They slipped their disgusting lukewarm hospital coffee out of the paper cups which coffees like these always came in. Ianto looked at his watch they had been at the hospital for more then two hours now. He was starting to get very annoyed, Owen hadn’t often been in charge and his track record for it wasn’t the best. Last time Owen put himself in charge of Torchwood he opened up the rift and almost distorted the world.
‘Where do you think Dr. Morgan has gone now?’ Gwen asked.
Nurse Brown had been true to her word and fetched the Doctor who had informed them that Toshiko was having a CAT scan and that they could take her home when they had the results from her tests back. Ianto had forced the Doctor’s hand and made him rush her tests and scans through. But that was little over an hour ago now and Ianto couldn’t help feeling that Toshiko had something alien wrong with her.
That was confusing the Doctors and making them take longer. Nurse Brown shuffled past them with her head downing, hoping they wouldn’t notice her. ‘Excuse me’ said Gwen standing up ‘Nurse Brown.’ The Nurse kept walking causing Gwen to tut loudly and follow her down the corridor. Ianto shared into his cup of coffee wondering how Jack was and if Owen would be able to help him.
Ianto may have worries about his leader ship skills but never about his medical skills, he had no doubts that Owen would be doing all he could for Jack even if there wasn’t much he could do. He wondered if he should call and ask after Jack, but didn’t want too much bad news in one go. He was sure that the Doctors where going give him bad news about Toshiko.
Gwen stomped back to her seat and threw her self at it, landing with a bump. ‘I’m sure she’s with holding information from me. All she would say is that we have to wait for the Doctors’ she said angrily. Ianto expected as much, they weren’t going to send a nurse to deliver bad news. Although it was clear that she knew exactly what was going on. ‘They’ll tell us when they know anything’ was all Ianto could think to say. Gwen gave him a weak smile and slipped her coffee.

Owen vaulted the railings that surrounded the pit in the autopsy room. He landed with a painful bump on the other side as his ankle gave way beneath him. ‘I have to go back’ Jack formed him from the door way. The bullet wounds bleed horribly soaking Jack’s trousers with his blood turning them a strange colour.
Owen threw himself across the autopsy table; he crouched down on the floor beside the table. He picked up his stun gun and turned towards the cabinet that stood beside the autopsy table. As he opened the cabinet door, Jack appeared in the gap between the autopsy table and the cold draw wall blocking Owen’s quickest exit.
‘I HAVE TO GO BACK’ Jack bellowed at Owen. ‘YOU CAN NOT STOP US’.
‘Maybe not’ said Owen calmly while taking a box of large sedatives out of the cabinet these ones were a lot bigger then the ones he kept in the SUV, one of these had enough sedative to drop an elephant.
‘But I’m going to have a bloody good try’ he slowly rose to his feet and held out the stun gun.
Jack moved towards Owen shutting the cabinet door as he did so. Owen backed away slowly holding the stun gun out in front of him. Jack bent down and picked up a scalpel off the floor. Owen had backed him self into the wall.
Owen’s back was against the wall the blood from his forehead was getting in his eyes. Owen stepped forward and pushed his stun gun into Jack’s shoulder.
As the 5,000 volts charged through Jack’s body he dropped to his knees and fell forward, managing to stab the scalpel into Owen’s thigh as he did so. ‘Arr’ Owen roared with pain as he dropped the stun gun and fell to his knees. Jack dropped to the floor as well and Owen took the opportunity to stab him with the sedative. Owen injected Jack with the sedative; Jack eyes closed and he fell into a deep sleep.
‘Good night Captain’ Owen whispered as he reached for something to stop his bleeding. He found a towel hanging off the railings and wrapped it around his thigh. He managed to pull himself painfully to his feet. While trying to catch his breath and decide weather alcohol or morphine would be better for the pain he heard something unsettling behind him. ‘I have to go back’ said a cold alien voice.

Toshiko looked small lying in her hospital bed. Ianto knew that she wasn’t a very tall person, but there was something about her lying in the hospital bed that made her look tiny. They had finally been aloud to see her after so many tests her arms looked like pin cushions and for own safety the hospital staff had strapped her down.
‘We can’t just leave her here’ Gwen begun. ‘She’s not safe here’
‘I have no intention of leaving her here’ Ianto told her. As Dr. Morgan shuffled into the room carrying some copies of Toshiko’s CAT scan.
‘Righto’ said Dr. Morgan in a fake cheerful voice. He put the scans on the table which stood over Toshiko’s bed.
‘This one is a normal healthy person’s scan’ he told them. Pointing at a scan of a brain that showed a lot of green parts on it. ‘The represents healthy areas of the brain, and this is Toshiko’s scan’ Tosh’s scan looked much the same expect it had a large black area on it. That seemed to be in the shape of some kind of insect.
‘This dark area is worrying for several reasons. Usually we would do tests for cancer, but this dark patch doesn’t seem to be a tremor because it’s… well it’s moving… as these other scans show.’ He put down the rest of the scans. The dark area was clearly moving around.
‘You see one of the Doctors or nurses made a mistake and she was sent for a scan twice and well that’s when we noticed it… moving around in there.’
Ianto looked at Gwen. She stared back at him. She didn’t want to panic but couldn’t see a way out of this. Jack had gone mad, Toshiko had something crawling around in her skull and none of the rest of them had a clue what to do next. She could tell that this was something big, something bad it had to be it got Jack.
Ianto was being as stony faced as he always was. He looked the Doctor in the eye and asked, ‘can we take her home now?’
The Doctor looked horrified ‘of course not… there’s something moving around in her brain’ Doctor Morgan had a point, could Owen treat this? Would he even know how to? Perhaps it would be best to leave her here.
But then Ianto did have his orders… and even through they didn’t come from Jack he had to follow them. Plus if something alien was going on, it was probably better that Torchwood dealt with it.
‘Actually’ Ianto begun, Gwen looked at him and gave him a reassuring smile. ‘I really do think it would be better if we took her home now’ he said coolly.
‘Are you mad?’ the good Doctor Morgan asked Ianto.
‘There is something living in her brain, we new to keep her here, we need to do tests, find experts get her the help she needs!’ Doctor Morgan had gone red in the face, he was practically yelling at Ianto now.
‘There’s no need to shout’ Gwen interjected, rather unhelpfully.
‘Doctor we are the experts, we are Torchwood. I promise you that we will make damn sure that she get all the help she needs.
Now I really do think it’s best she come with us don’t you?’ Ianto remained his cool, calm self.
Doctor Morgan let out a heavy sigh ‘yes, I suppose your right’ he said letting his head bow a little.

‘You have got to be fucking kidding me’ Owen breathed as he saw Jack stand up again. He’d shot him, stunned him and given him enough sedative to drop an elephant yet Captain Jack Harkness kept getting up.
Summoning all the strength he had in his arms Owen pulled himself up on the railing and slipped in between them. Now he was sat on the rise part of the autopsy room and was attempting to pull his legs free of the railings when Jack lunged at him grabbing one of his legs. With the other Owen delivered an almighty kick to his Captain’s face.
Knocking him backwards, as he fell Jack smacked his head on the autopsy table. Causing him to bleed an inhuman black oozing blood. Jack got up once more. Owen felt his eyes widen Jack was unstoppable; at least he seemed to be. Owen pulled himself to his feet and half hopped half ran towards the arch way which leads to his and Toshiko’s work stations.
He was half way there when out of no where Jack tackled him. As Owen slammed his head on the floor and felt his arm crack underneath him. Jack was sat on his stomach Jack punched him in the face, sending a shooting pain through his left eye and to the back of his head. Jack hit him again this time in the mouth; Owen could taste his own blood in his mouth. This time before Jack could hit him again Owen whacked Jack in the nose first.
Owen hit him again before Jack had a chance to regain his posture, and then Owen hit him again. This time Jack fell backwards enough for Owen to free himself from underneath Jack. Owen scrambled to his feet and ignoring the pain he ran for his desk. He grabbed his gun, Jack ran at him knocking the gun out of his hand and standing most to the paper work on Owen’s desk to the floor. Jack had one hand on Owens throat and the other holding Owens arm pinning it to Owens side so that Owen couldn’t hit him.
Owen had his free hand on Jack’s shoulder and was trying to push him away, it was very painful and Owen wondered if he had broken his arm. Owen could feel that Jack’s grip was cutting off his air. Finding it hard to breathe and going weaker Owen stopped trying to struggle against Jack. Jack let go of Owens arm which fell limply to his desk landing on his keyboard. ‘Open it’ Jack growled at Owen now with both hands around Owens neck.
Feeling the keyboard under his hand Owen made one last ditch attempt to save his own life. He picked up his Keyboard and smacked Jack around the head with it. Jack let go and stumbled backwards slightly, desperate and knowing that wouldn’t stop Jack for long Owen looked for something else to hit Jack with. He dropped his keyboard on his desk as Jack grabbed Owen from behind and turned him around to face Jack. Then Jack kicked him in the balls, Owen stumbled side ways and groaned with pain.
‘That was uncalled for’ he muttered as he leant on Tosh’s desk. Jack was coming at him again; Owen dodged causing Jack to hit one of Tosh’s computer screens sending glass and sparks flying everywhere. Owen pushed Tosh’s chair at Jack causing him to fall over it. Owen panicking and desperate he looked around for something to stop Jack.
He saw his coat laying on Tosh’s desk and remembered the large silver metal ball that lied underneath it. He threw his coat a side and picked up the silver ball, as he turned to face Jack he slammed the ball full force into his head. Jack’s legs buckled under him and he fell to the floor, as did the silver ball. It rolled along the floor and smashed into the wall. In opened wide and begun to play a strange alien music.
Owen smiled to himself it was a fucking music box. Jack was trying to get to his feet again. Owen dived at the floor and grabbed his gun. He rolled on to his back and remembering the Captain's ability shot Jack in the head three times. Jack fell back to the floor motionless and apparently dead. Owen knew he didn’t have much time; he slid his gun into the back of his trousers and picked up his Captain’s body.

‘I can’t believe you did that’ Gwen said as Ianto drove them back to the hub.
‘Did what?’ Ianto asked slightly confused.
‘Just picked her up and carried her out.’
‘Well what did you expect me too do? I was just following orders’
‘Since when did you take orders from Owen?’
‘Since Jack went AWOL and was found covered in his own blood… do you know what I’d love to know?’
‘What would you love to know?’
‘I’d love to know what happened to Toshiko’s trousers’
Gwen laughed ‘me too’ she added.
They had made good time on their way back, which was mostly down to Ianto complete disregard for the speed limit. Gwen looked over her shoulder at Toshiko whom was lying on the back seat. She had woken up briefly in the hospital and was now sleeping under her coat. She was still wearing the hospital grown Ianto didn’t want to waste any time.
Gwen thought that he must want to get back to Jack; she had noticed them running a few red lights on the way out of Newport. Ianto nervously drummed his fingers on the wheel, questions flowed his mind. Would Jack be okay? Was taking Tosh from the hospital really a good idea? Would Owen be able to save them?
‘I know what you’re thinking’ Gwen told him.
‘You do?’ Ianto wasn’t at all surprised. Gwen had a sixth sense when it came to people and understanding them.
‘You’re worried about Jack…’
Ianto nodded he really was worried and honestly he didn’t think he could take losing someone else.
‘Do you love him?’ Gwen asked softly. The honest answer made him feel awkward and sick with betrayal.
‘No…’ Ianto reluctantly answered, but him and Gwen both knew that the no was really a yes. Gwen smiled weakly at him; Ianto could feel a lump in his throat rising to the back of his mouth and tears welling up in his eyes.
Admitting that he was in love with Jack would feel like he was betraying Lisa, sleeping with the man that killed her was bad enough. However telling Gwen he didn’t love Jack felt like he was denouncing him in his hour of need, who was he trying to protect? Himself? Lisa? Or Jack? He turned into the underground parking bay of Torchwood. ‘Almost there Tosh’ Gwen told their sleeping passenger.
He pressed the button on the desk board which activated the parking bay’s doors. A message flashed up on the screen which also sat on the dashboard. The message read TORCHWOOD IS IN EMERGENCY LOCK DOWN SYSTEMS WILL REACTIVATE IN FOUR HOURS AND TWENTY TWO MINUTES. A counter appeared on the screen and started to count down the minutes and the seconds until the systems would reactivate.
‘What the hell is going on?’ asked Gwen.
‘I have no idea’ Ianto told her as he pulled out his mobile phone and called Owen. All he got was Owens annoying answer phone ‘Harper, leave a message; actually don’t because I won’t call you back’.
‘The network coverage must be out all I’m getting is voice mail’
‘Oh great so in the mean time we’re stuck out here in the cold… are we?’
