http://miss-shine.livejournal.com/11467.html And here's part seven below so please leave comments, good or bad!!
Owen tried not to focus on the pain in his leg, or his face, or his throat, or his arm as he dragged Jack very slowly down to the vaults. With no regard for Jack’s safety or well beginning he dropped Jack down most of the stairs and a couple of the ladders.
The way Owen was justifying this was that keeping Jack unconscious was better for the both of them. He reached the cells of level nine and dragged Jack into the corridor, which ran in between the cells. He dropped his feet on the floor again and opened the cell next Janet the weevil’s cell.
Using the emergency codes that allowed him to open the cell when the hub was in lock down. Janet growled at him, so he growled back thinking ‘shut up’ he tried pushing it out of his brain and into hers. He didn’t know weather she heard him or not, but she stopped growling and disappeared to the back of her cell.
He picked up Jack’s feet and dragged him into the cell. He once again dropped Jack’s feet on the floor and left the cell locking it behind him. He limped up stairs to his computer and set about trying to reopen the hub, he hoped that Gwen and Ianto would be back soon; he really didn’t want to be on his own.
He hacked into the CCTV and saw that the SUV was by the parking bay’s entrance. As he sat at his computer the gun in the back off his trousers was beginning to annoy him, it was sticking into his back and making him uncomfortable. So he took it out and placed it on the desk next to him.
He pressed his ear piece to try and gain contact with the others ‘Gwen, Ianto can you heard me?’ there was a lot of white noise before the distant, crackly sound of Gwen’s voice ‘Owen we can hear you’.
‘Good, is Toshiko alright?’ he’d been dying to hear news about her since they left to go and get her. If it hadn’t been for Jack he would have gone and got her himself.
‘Yeah, yeah… well sort of … what the hell is going on here Owen why is the hub in lock down?’
‘Um… well that was sort of necessary’
‘What? Why?’ Ianto butted it.
‘Look I’ll explain later, right now I need to concentrate on getting the hub out of lock down… wait a minute what do you mean by Toshiko’s sort of alright?’
‘We’ll explain later’ Ianto said in a tone that ended their conversation.
The pain in Owens leg was getting too much to bear, he stood up and limped over to Jack’s office grabbed his glass of whiskey and the bottle. He then limped back to his computer and angled the screen so that he could see it from the floor; he picked up his keyboard and sat on the floor.
He put his back against the wall opposite his desk and his keyboard on his lap. He placed the whiskey glass and bottle next to his and set about forcing the hub out of lock down. The pain in his leg was almost bearable now, enough so that he could concentrate at least.
Ianto and Gwen were finally back inside Torchwood; they were riding down in the lift to the main hub. Ianto was holding Toshiko in his arms she was still sleeping. ‘What do you think Owen meant when he said locking the hub down was necessary?’ Gwen asked Ianto while looking at the print out of Tosh’s scans.
‘I don’t know’ Ianto replied, he really didn’t how could trap himself inside have been necessary. If there was something bad in there with then surly the last thing he would have wanted to be was trapped with it. Unless, and as he thought about this his opinion of Owen changed, he wasn’t thinking about his own safety but the safety of others. Suddenly Ianto found that he actually did respect Owen… just a little.
The lift doors opened and they stepped out and walked the short distance to the cog door as it rolled back to let them through they could see some of the main hub beyond it. They were greeted by a pool of blood that Gwen carefully stepped over before pointing it out to Ianto.
This was what Gwen was good at, suddenly they had found themselves in the middle of a crime screen she remained calm as she pulled out her gun. She walked towards the workstations she could see a lot of glass and paper laying on the floor.
As she claimed the steps she noticed more blood, she turned around to see Ianto gingerly following her. She moved around to get a clear view of Toshiko’s work station, one of the screens was broken and the others all showed CCTV footage of the vaults Jack was lying in a pool of his own blood in one of the cells.
A strange alien music filled her ears she looked around to see where it was coming from. She saw the silver ball Toshiko had been working on had turned into a spiral and was playing the music next to it Owen sat on the floor his face and eyes here dead. She turned back to look at Ianto his eyes where fixed on Owen, she turned back to him and took a few quick steps towards him.
Gwen slipped on some more blood and fell to the floor. To her horror she realized that the floor was covered in broke glass and blood. She let out a small squeak as she scrambled to her feet. Ianto put Toshiko down on the sofa opposite the workstations. Once she was back on her feet she took a few more steps towards Owen.
He had moved an inch since they first spotted him sitting on the floor, to despite the noise that Gwen had just made. Slowly and carefully Ianto and Gwen moved towards him. Ianto reached out and took hold of Gwen’s left arm as the inched towards Owen. He looked at Gwen how had gone a bit pale; Ianto felt his stomach drop when he realized that Owen hadn’t blinked since they had been standing over him.
Ianto bent down pulling Gwen with him as he did so, he placed two fingers on Owens neck in an effort to find a pulse. There was one it was strong and showed no signs of stopping. Ianto looked at Gwen then back at Owen, he knelt down next to him.
‘Owen’ he said softy as Gwen knelt down next to him. Owen blinked and then slowly looked at Ianto.
‘I can’t make it stop’ Owen told him softly.
‘Can’t make what stop?’ Ianto asked him; still not sure of what the hell was going on.
‘The music’ Owen nodded to the ball and continued to stare at nothing.
‘Owen, that doesn’t matter. Look at me Owen, what happened here’ Ianto placed his hand on Owens thigh only to discover it was bleeding badly. ‘Oh shit’ he said looking at his now blood covered hand.
‘I don’t know what to do’ Owen whispered tears rolling down his face. ‘I have to stop it… but I can’t do what Jack needs me too… I can’t… I’m not good enough…I couldn’t save Katie, but I couldn’t let him go…’ Owen looked up at his computer screens, images of the cells where on his screens too Jack was still lying in his own blood. ‘I couldn’t … I knew he couldn’t die… so I shot him… he hasn’t moved since…not an inch… I… I was …trying …to …help’ Owen breathing became labored and difficult has he tried to fight the tears.
‘I’ve killed him’ he spat at them before rolling over on to his knees and violently vomiting on the floor.
Gwen stood up with a worried look on her face. Ianto moved closer to him and rubbed his back. ‘Tell us what happened Owen’ he said calmly even though inside he was screaming for Jack.
‘He went mad… the thing inside him went mad… he was trying to ‘go back’ that’s what it made him say over and over’ Owen took a deep breathe. ‘I had to stop him he was a danger to himself and others, I tried the stun gun… twice and I give him enough sedative to drop an elephant but he kept getting up and then I remembered the morgue… this morning he had been dead in the bay… but he came back he always comes back. So I shot him, if I didn’t he would have killed me.’
Ianto took in what Owen was saying and looked at the state of him. Owen was covered in cuts and bruises as well as the nasty stab wound he appeared to have a broke arm that he was clutching. Ianto had no doubt that in his alien state Jack would have killed Owen.
‘I got him into the cells and let you back in but he hasn’t moved… what if I’ve really done it this time? What if that’s it and he doesn’t come back? Either that or the thing inside him is playing tricks on me’
‘He’s coming back; he wouldn’t leave us’ Ianto reassured him hoping to god that it was true. ‘What do you mean thing inside of him?’
Owen looked at him, his blood and tear stained face looked confused for a moment and then… ‘Oh, at first I thought that he’d been infected with something but then I did the CAT scans and found something… in there’ he trailed off.
Gwen waved Tosh’s scan print outs at him, ‘like this’ she said. Owen took the prints outs from her; he turned pale and his face dropped. Suddenly he looked older like he’d aged twenty years right there and then in front of them.
‘Yeah… where did you get these?’ he didn’t want to know he knew what the answer was going to be, he couldn’t bear it.
‘Their Toshiko’s’ Gwen told him. His heart was in his mouth oh god no the words kept flashing through his brain not Tosh anyone but her was all he could think over and over.
‘Jack’s are the same’ he told them as he moved back into a sitting position and picked up the keyboard. ‘Katie’s were the same as well I’ve pulled up her files.’ He hit a few buttons on the keyboard that lay across his lap.
‘Katie had one inside her head years ago, I think that her down a sort of scout in her mind and now they’ve started the invasion’ Owen tried to stand up he fell clumsily side wards as he did so, only to be court by Ianto who then helped him to his feet. Owen stumbled to his desk and picked up Jack’s scan he compared them with Toshiko’s. The thing in Jack’s head was bigger but other then that they were definitely the same.
‘Fuck’ was all that he could manage. He looked over at Tosh laying on the sofa fast a sleep; he could feel tears welling up in his eyes. Suddenly he realized something that he hadn’t noticed before, something about himself that he hadn’t noticed before… was he in love with Toshiko? Ianto put his hand firmly on Owens shoulder trying to get Owen to look him in the eye.
‘Owen’ he said sharply ‘we need to know what to do next, we need you to lead us’ Ianto didn’t think he was going to get much of a reaction from Owen he seemed to be in shock, and he was pale Owen had defiantly lost a lot of blood. He was in a bad way. Owen pushed Ianto out of his way and limped over to the sofa where Tosh was laying. He dropped to his knees and ran his fingers through her hair he had to save her.
Gwen looked at Ianto and then tried to get though to Owen. She placed her hand lovingly on his shoulder ‘Owen… we need you… too…err’ she looked back at Ianto she didn’t know what she was trying to ask him to do. Owen noticed something on Tosh’s ear, he pulled out his phone and found the photo he taken of the body in the morgue.
He compared it with Tosh’s ear there was the same tiny marks around both of their ears. ‘Ring the morgue’ Owen demanded ‘ask them for a cause of death on that victim they pulled out of the bay this morning’. Ianto jumped to it he picked up the phone and dialed the number.
Gwen turned back to Owen, ‘check the CCTV’ Owen told her. ‘Track Jack and Tosh after they left the hub find out where they went’ Gwen jumped to it; she went over to her own computer and started to pull up all of the CCTV that she could find.
She watched Owen kneeing beside Tosh running his fingers through her hair. Gwen smiled to herself she missed that, Owen running his fingers through her hair the smell of him in the morning after a night of passionate sex. The sleigh winks and rude private jokes that he would make up. Although she missed him greatly she knew that stopping it was for the best… or at least she had almost managed to convince herself it was.
She pulled up the CCTV of Jack in his cell and made it small enough to place in the corner of her screen. She flicked through the footage of Tosh and Jack walking arm in arm through Cardiff city centre. The wind blew through Tosh’s hair, and made Jack’s coat bellow behind him. He points at something up in the sky, she smiles at it. Gwen thinks they look like a happy couple as they strolled through the cities streets.
Toshiko shivered and Jack put an arm around her, Gwen thought that they could have been a couple. She saw them go into the club and then fast-forwarded the tape until they came out again. They here only in there for an hour and a half before leaving again now they were laughing and singing badly at the top of their lungs.
They went into a kebab shop and brought something to eat they ate their burgers as Jack walked Toshiko home they hugged on her doorstep and then Jack headed home. Jack walked back towards the hub at the end of the plaza some people were pushing and shoving. Jack shouted something at them and walked towards them, Gwen zoomed in.
One of the men was now lying dead in the morgue. Jack got involved in the fight and they all shattered leaving the young man sitting on the floor and holding his head. The man stood up and walked off muttering to himself Jack followed trying to talk to him.
They reached the water front Jack grabbed hold of the young man clearly realizing that something was wrong. They started to have a bit of a shuffle between them before felling over the barrier and into the water. ‘The cause of death is not known, all they had really managed to figure out was that he defiantly didn’t drown.’ Said Ianto and breaking Gwen’s concentration.
‘So he was dead when he went into the bay?’ Asked Owen.
‘They think so that was pretty much all they could tell from the body, although he did have a few track marks on his arms so they have concluded that it was an over dose… oh Jack just moved’ he said looking at the screen.
‘Thank fuck for that’ Owen said sharing at the screen, he closed his eyes and breathed a long slow sigh of relief. Ianto watched his lover roll on to his stomach and slowly stand up. Jack stumbled over to the bare stone cube, which Torchwood claimed was a bed, and sat down on it his head in his hands.
‘Do you think he’s in pain?’ Ianto asked with a look of concern on his face. Owen shook his head a little bit, ‘it’s hard to say… I don’t know weather he’ll be able to tell us or not, he’s not really in any state to make any sense’
Ianto watched his Jack rubbing his arms like he was cold; he pulled his knees to his chest and wrapped his arms around them.
‘We wasn’t dead when he went into the bay’ said Gwen ‘look at this’ she showed them the CCTV footage of Jack and the young man fighting.
Owen was very interested in it, ‘when this type of alien is threatened it can admit a poisonous gas’ he said. ‘Its designed to kill predators and clear the air quickly, why would it need to do that? Unless the gas is toxic to it as well as us.’
Ianto and Gwen looked at each other, ‘what are you getting at?’ asked Ianto.
‘Perhaps when they felt into the water it felt threaten and admitted the gas into a very small confined space and it suffocated its self before the poor guy had a chance to inhale any water.’
‘Its one theory’ admitted Ianto wondering weather Owen had indeed hit upon something.
‘Of course I won’t know for sure unless I can take a closer look at it’ he grinned at Ianto.
‘You want me to go and get the body don’t you?’
‘Yes please I’d go myself but…’ Owen exhibiting his various injuries but he was thinking of Toshiko and fell a pang of guilt when Ianto turned towards the computer screens to look at Jack before slowly nodding in agreement.
‘Can I grab a lift?’ Gwen asked ‘the CCTV doesn’t show anything to suggest that they got attacked, apart from Jack getting in that fight… if it happened on Friday night then it happened in the club or the kebab shop I want to check it out’
‘Good plan, but if your going too then we should put Toshiko in the cells first, I don’t think I will be able to carry her downstairs’ said Owen.
‘I’ll take her’ said Ianto as he picked her up, ‘Gwen why don’t you help Doctor Harper patch himself up, unless you want me to drop you off at the hospital?’
‘Fat fucking chance we could very well be in the middle of an invasion I’m not wasting valuable hours on the fucking NHS’ he spat, as Ianto had predicted Owen hated the NHS and hasn’t worked for or believed in them since Katie died.
‘Come on Gwen I’ll talk you through it… do you recon you can attach a drip?’
‘I’ll try’ she said as Gwen supported him to the autopsy pit.
