The One For Me - chapter 3

Oct 04, 2009 22:22

As Sungmin walked away from the table to where Kyuhyun was still waiting impatiently in the line, Sungmin couldn’t believe what he had just found out. He could never look at Ryeowook the same way again. He didn’t know how to feel. He was emotionless at the moment, much too shocked to think clearly.

But, he couldn’t let Kyuhyun know this. He had to put on a show for Kyuhyun, pretending to be happy and as if nothing was going on.

As he neared the lunch line, Kyuhyun spotted him and gave him a very warm and welcoming smile. It warmed Sungmin’s heart to see Kyuhyun give one of his rare genuine smiles just by seeing him.

“Hey, hyung! What took you so long?” Kyuhyun asked cheekily. Sungmin smiled, admiring the way Kyuhyun’s cheeks had a soft pink glow when he smiled, the way his perfect set of teeth gleamed like pearls, the way his eyes became like warm liquid chocolate…

“Hyung?” Kyuhyun asked curiously when Sungmin didn’t respond.

“Uh, sorry, I got caught up in talking with Heechul…” Sungmin murmered as he blushed, realizing he had been dazing off while admiring Kyuhyun.

“Oooohh! You’re blushing! I wonder what you two were talking about…” Kyuhyun teased as he waggled his eyebrows. Sungmin grimaced as he caught onto what Kyuhyun was implying.

“Kyu, you do know that if Heechul heard you say that, he would behead you before Hankyung had a chance to even get jealous, right?” Sungmin asked warily.

Kyuhyun frowned. “I wasn’t serious…” he trailed off as he pouted.

Sungmin caught himself staring at Kyuhyun again. Kyuhyun’s lips were so pink and plump when he pouted. Sungmin gulped, his breathing becoming uneven. No, not now, at this time… he thought. The last thing he needed was to get turned on by Kyuhyun. Kyuhyun’s heart had been through too much in the past. Sungmin didn’t want to scar him from ever trusting anyone forever.

Kyuhyun noticed Sungmin becoming uncomfortable. “Hyung? What’s wrong? Oh, does your stomach hurt? Is that it?” Kyuhyun guessed worriedly.

Sungmin couldn’t think of any better excuse. “Yeah, I feel kinda sick…” he lied.

Kyuhyun got worried. “Ah! I told you not to eat those pop-tarts this morning… Don’t throw up! Um, let’s take you to the nurse! Here!” He grabbed Sungmin’s hand and rushed to the nurse’s office. Sungmin didn’t object; he liked the way Kyuhyun’s soft hand felt around his.

When they reached the office, Kyuhyun knocked thrice on the door, softly so that he wouldn’t disturb any other sick patients in there, and waited. Finally, someone came to the door.

Kyuhyun grimaced when he saw who it was.

“Heyy! If it isn’t Sungmin and Kyuhyun!” She greeted them. Sooyeon opened the door further, gesturing for them to come in.

“You don’t have to act as if this is your house...” Kyuhyun muttered. Sungmin smirked behind Kyuhyun’s back.

Sooyeon quickly noticed that they were holding hands. She looked at Sungmin, who was still smiling at Kyuhyun’s back, and caught on. Then, a plan formed in her head.

“Kyuhyun, why don’t you have a seat over there?” Sooyeon offered as she gestured to an empty plastic seat over by the foot of the bed. Kyuhyun hesitiated, but nodded and went to sit.

“Sungmin, you lay down here.” Sooyeon said as she gave a warm smile. Sungmin didn’t notice the way her smile was too sweet. The way her words were said in an over-acting way. The way she fluttered her eyelashes at him oh-so-slightly after Sungmin had looked away. But Kyuhyun did.

Kyuhyun wished Sooyeon would leave already, but from the looks of it, it didn’t look like Sooyeon was about to leave anytime soon. She had sat in the chair next to by the head of the bed Sungmin was now on.

Sungmin noticed Sooyeon was smiling at him, and smiled back. Not a genuine smile, but a friendly smile. He noticed Kyuhyun glaring at the two of them too. When Kyuhyun looked away, Sungmin looked at Sooyeon questioningly. Sooyeon winked at Sungmin. Sungmin instantly became suspicious, and gave her a look that definitely said WHAT THE HELL?

Sooyeon just smiled impishly, and said coyly, “Kyuhyun? Could you pass that thermometre? I might as well check Sungmin’s temperature while we’re waiting for the nurse.”

“Do you have some medical degree that we didn’t know about?” Kyuhyun asked rather coldly.

Sooyeon giggled. “No, but I AM helping the nurse’s office everyday at lunch and after school. I’ve received training for preparing the patient for the nurse!” Sooyeon replied cheerily. Kyuhyun scowled when she turned away to reach for some vinyl gloves.

Kyuhyun sat there stubbornly, refusing to help Sooyeon in the slightest way. But, eventually his consience reasoned out with him that it was for Sungmin who wasn’t feeling well. So he reached for the thermometre, and placed it beside Sungmin, shoulder to Sooyeon. Sooyeon thanked him and gave him a smile, but Kyuhyun ignored it and sat back down and crossed his arms.

Sungmin was enjoying it the whole time, watching Kyuhyun act all jealous. The only part that hurt him was that Kyuhyun didn’t know he was jealous, not why he was acting this way. Sungmin wondered if Kyuhyun would ever want Sungmin the way he always wanted Kyuhyun.

As if she could read his thoughts, Sooyeon put a comforting hand on Sungmin’s shoulder, and gave him a sympathetic look. Sungmin weakly smiled back, reassuring her that he was fine. But Sooyeon didn’t buy it. Suddenly she stuck the thermometre in Sungmin’s mouth, and held it there with a tender hand.

Kyuhyun didn’t think it was necessary for her to hold the thermometer in place. What did she think Sungmin was gonna do; play tag with Kyuhyun with the thing in his mouth? Kyuhyun rolled his eyes.

After a minute had passed, Sooyeon slowly removed the thermometre from Sungmin’s mouth, seeming as if she was trying to be seductive. Sungmin’s eyes widened in alarm, cautioning her, but she ignored it. Then she softly brushed the hair from Sungmin’s neck, and trailed her fingers softly to below his jawbone. There she stopped, and held her hand there, taking his pulse as she looked down at her watch.

The whole time, Kyuhyun wanted to rip Sooyeon’s hand away from his Minnie’s neck. Who was she to touch him like that? How did she know if he even wanted to be touched like that by her?

When two minutes had passed, Kyuhyun cleared his throat noisily. Sungmin was biting his lip to fight a smile that was threatening to spread across his face. Kyuhyun’s jealousy was strangely inviting for Sungmin.

“Now, let’s check your heart rate; now if you could remove your shir-“

“Okay, Sungmin, I think you’re fine! Let’s go!” Kyuhyun cut Sooyeon off. Sooyeon and Sungmin both looked amused.

Quickly, before anyone could say anything, Kyuhyun grabbed Sungmin’s hand, pulled him off of the bed, and led them out the door. Kyuhyun banged the door loudly on their way out.

Kyuhyun was still scowling as they made their way to their lockers, Sungmin trailing behind, amused. On the way, he received a text from Sooyeon.

He’s got it bad for you. Make him notice you, already. Stop stalling.
                                                  -Sooyeon

Sungmin smiled to himself, thanking which ever gods there were up there for giving him such great friends.

“How are you feeling? Would you have rathered I didn’t pull you away from the nurse’s office?” Kyuhyun asked with a hint of regret in his voice.

“No. I’m fine now.” Sungmin replied happily with a smile. Kyuhyun looked back to see Sungmin’s lit up face, and smiled back.

Neither of them realised that they were still holding hands as they approached their lockers.

“So, hyung, if you weren’t sick, what happened in the lunch line?”

Sungmin’s step faltered as he tried to come up with a believable excuse, since he wasn’t exactly the best at lying…

Kyuhyun impatiently waited. Finally, when Sungmin didn’t say anything, Kyuhyun abruptly stopped, causing Sungmin to bump into him from behind. Kyuhyun forgot how small Sungmin was compared to him…

Kyuhyun turned around. “Hyung?” he asked with one eyebrow raised.

“Uhh... um… y-you see… ehh…” Sungmin stammered.

Kyuhyun was getting annoyed. Why couldn’t Sungmin just say it already?

Suddenly, Kyuhyun pushed Sungmin against the nearest locker, and Sungmin squealed. Kyuhyun kept his hands on either side of Sungmin’s head against the lockers, and looked him in the eye. Sungmin found that Kyuhyun’s gaze could be very penetrating at times. Especially when he was aggrivated.

“Hyung. Tell. Me. Now.” Kyuhyun said each word very sternly.

Sungmin couldn’t help but obey. “R-ryeowook…”

Kyuhyun’s face became confused. That wasn’t the last thing he thought it would be about. But it definitely didn’t make the top 10 either.

“What about him?” Kyuhyun, more relaxed now, asked. He relaxed against the lockers, still leaning over Sungmin, but with one hand on his hip now. Sungmin was still tensed against the lockers.

“He… he’s back.”

Kyuhyun rolled his eyes. “Yeah, hyung. I know that. I’m the one that told you, remember?”

Sungmin shook his head. “He’s back. For me.”

Kyuhyun looked confused. He stepped back and took Sungmin’s hand.

“Why don’t you tell me in the school garden?” he suggested as he pulled Sungmin away from the lockers and led him to the back of the school, ouside.

Kyuhyun sat, staring at the clouds, waiting for Sungmin to calm down and start speaking.

Beside him, Sungmin sat there, trying to clear his thought and to organize them.

He softly cleared his throat, signaling to Kyuhyun that he was going to begin. Kyuhyun redirected his gaze to him, and slightly turned his body to face Sungmin.

“Uhm, I found out why Ryeowook is back. And why he left.”

Kyuhyun hoped Sungmin didn’t notice the way his breathing faltered when Sungmin mentioned the past incident. He gestured for Sungmin to continue.

Sungmin took a deep breath, then exhaled. “I’ll start with why he left.”

Kyuhyun braced himself.

“Ryeowook… didn’t love you Kyu. He never did. He was using you to get to another boy.” Sungmin held up a hand when Kyuhyun was about to ask the obvious question.

“He thought that if he dated you, the other boy would get jealous. That boy never did though. So he gave up on the plan involving you, and moved to America to become some one better, and impress the boy with his new image.”

Kyuhyun figured the rest out. “And so he’s back for the boy, isn’t he?”

Sungmin slowly nodded, cautious of how Kyuhyun would react.

Kyuhyun exhaled sharply, puffing his cheeks out in the process. “So, do you know who that boy is then?”

Sungmin reluctantly nodded. “Yeah, Kyu. I do know who it is.”

Kyuhyun waited. He realised, the same time Sungmin finished his point, who it was after remembering what Sungmin said at the lockers, before they came to the garden.

“It’s… me. He’s back for me.
