Working Comes 'Fore the Weekend Comes

Work was hard today!

Part of that was being superduper sleepy- last night I hung out with my co-worker Brian over video games and drinks and pizza, but fortunately I can overcome that with a liquid diet of Gatorade and Rockstar, fortified with a Subway sammich halfway through the day. Donnie had it worse than I did- more than a few times I caught him staring empty-eyed and nearly asleep on his computer at the Copy Center.

Combine a little dehydration and malnutrition with the first day of many killer sales, being understaffed in both Office Supplies and Technology and a bad closing job by the crew last night, and it was a terrible trainwreck.

But it was fun, too. We have a new girl at work, Elizabeth, and it's fun to talk and play with her, and Ashley's been a lot more enjoyable now that she's not trying to over-manage everything. I also got to kick it a little with Wesley and Alex today, in little breaths between clumps of customers, and those guys are fun.

Relatedly, I've got to get more comfortable with casually touching girls again, though. It's been so long that when Ashley leaned against me while she was doing something at the same register I was at (was that flirting? maybe. Naw. No Way. Even if it was it wasn't serious. was it?) I almost put an arm around her. And I couldn't leave the counter for a few minutes >.<

I think she might've just done it because Elizabeth was at the next register over ...

I also did the listings for the Jackson office tonight, and thankfully it took me less than 20 minutes. If there'd been any new entries it would've been different, but this week was lucky.

This is just me tooting my own horn, but I am very pleased with the system I've designed for managing that job. Now that I've got it streamlined and in smooth working order, I can download the new listings, sort them into time-stamped stacks, and the sheet automatically checks entries for discrepancies in price and name, so with just a few minutes of sorting and labeling I have everything divided into 'New Entry', 'Price Change', 'Old Listing/Check Status' and 'OK'.

It makes me feel very efficient.

What DOESN'T make me feel efficient is that I just realized that the price of parking is swallowing up my funds. New management just took over the parking lot I use for work, and they now charge $7 a day.

After taxes and rent and utilities, my net income comes down to $8.77 a day.

Even with the extra money that I get from doing the property listings (Thank You Megan!), I'm only staying afloat thanks to the generosity of my parents several months back when I graduated from college, which I'm still using to pad my budget.

I'm going to work just to pay for my ability to go to work. And that doesn't even include food, gas, and parking tickets.

So I'm going to ask to leave my car at my parents' house the next time I'm up, and for them to drive me back down to San Francisco. It'll save me cash money every day, I'll avoid the incidentals, and having to take a bus to and from work will give me lots of reading time.

But mostly, with that budget and a monthly bus pass, I'll be able to grow some savings. And those I desperately need, because I'm already poor, but right now I'm one accident away from poverty.

That ends this vent. Tune in next time for Space Empires: The Big Evil Empire.
