He wanted to see how it might be possible to speed up his movements, the way that damnable gelding had done to win the duel.

Tonio hadn't felt any more urge than usual to sing - but given that he always sings, anyway, that could explain his lack of carolling.

Teja nods, and imitates. He had not asked the eunuch to show him, but it would be bad grace to decline this offer of civility, after having lost the duel.
If he tries, he might get through this without having to say much, and without the eunuch laughing at him.
