Second Year, here I come

May 20, 2006 19:02

It's official. I am a second year med student. I feel like I should get a little stripe for my coat or something, like a patch for the war wounds I received this year. The post-test party was really fun. Our class ran out of our 5,000 bar tab by 10:30pm. People were laughing so hard, people were crying because they finally could, people were just smiling, dancing around, some passing out. It was surreal. Jake even came down and hung out. I had a blast.

Lucky me got to wake up hung over this morning and drive to downtown New Orleans to work in the student run homeless clinic. Boy was that a reality check!! I learned how to do TB skin tests and took a patient history. Our patients are 17-25 year olds living in a shelter called the covenant house, not in the best area of New Orleans. I had to ask them questions that almost made me turn red, but they didn't flinch one bit. It is just so different than anything else I have experienced.

Next week is CAMP TIGER! It's a week long summer camp that us first (well second now I guess) years put on for physically and mentally handicapped children. We take them to the zoo, skating rink, bowling, to the park, global wildlife center, etc. It's a really awesome week. I spent the afternoon setting up for that.

Now I am heading to dinner with my family because it's my grandmaw's birthday. I am happier than I have been since school started in August. It feels good to smile.
