Chapter 30
By morning, Junsu’s fever raged. Yoochun often had to hold Junsu to keep him from tossing around on the bed.
“My lord, please eat something,” Jaebum commanded his master, after two days of food, which Yoochun hardly touched. “You don’t help the boy by starving yourself like this.”
Absently, the earl ate, never taking his eyes from his pale wife.
Yoochun had hours, long painful hours to think about the boy who lay before him, his child-like face red and hot with fever.
How many times had Junsu told him, that he loved only Yoochun?
And how often did he jeer at the boy for his avowals of love?
He knew Junsu is someone who had so much pride, yet he had swallowed that pride to follow Yoochun even after he had struck him and said he wanted to cast him aside.
He dipped the cloth in warm water and wiped Junsu’s forehead, touching the boy’s mouth gently. He remembered vividly the blood on Junsu lips when he had struck him, and his stomach tightened in disgust and remorse.
Junsu didn’t move, but lay there perfectly still, very death-like. Yoochun lifted the small hot hand to his lips.
Junsu had asked him what he had to do to prove his love.
He had love Junsu once. No, he thought as he rubbed the small hand against his cheek, he had love Junsu at once, from the first moment he had seen him, when he had stared at the Black Lion with his sparkling golden eyes. Why had he forgotten those first few days?
He remembered Hyukjae and GaRam, his first wife, and it suddenly seemed so clear to him. Hyukjae had been mad. He had willed his own death, using Yoochun as it means, and Yoochun had believed the boy over his Junsu’s word. Yet he had only to look and he would have seen the unnatural light in the boy’s eyes.
He began to realize how much he had wronged Junsu, and the pain and fever Junsu bore now set more heavily upon him. Never had GaRam given him any avowal of love. His first wife had given nothing but hate.
“His condition gets any better?”
Yoochun hadn’t heard Jaebum entered the tent. “No, his fever stills the same.”
“The men prayed for him. They have already come to love the boy and admire him for his courage.”
Yoochun turned a black face to his man. “And what good does their love for him now when he lies so near to his death? Why not they ‘love’ him in the thick of battle, when he must protect his husband with his own frail body? Why didn’t someone stop him from coming on this journey? Why…?”
He broke off as Jaebum put a hand on his lord’s shoulder, and Yoochun buried his face in his hands, giving away the tears long buried in his chest.

“Water,”
Yoochun sat still, his eyes half-closed, and did not hear the faint whisper. For five days he had not left Junsu’s side, and he hadn’t eaten anything in the last three days. Now, he was weak, his grief worn him away.
“Water,” Junsu repeated.
Yoochun jumped and stared with disbelief at Junsu’s open eyes. It was seconds before he recovered himself enough to take Junsu in his arms and lifted a cool mug of water to Junsu’s lips.
“I don’t remember. Why am I here?”
He held Junsu closed to him, feeling his heart pounding. Junsu will be well!
“Hush now, baby. Don’t speak. You took an arrow meant for me.” He blinked back the tears and worked hard not to crush Junsu to him.
“Are you hurt anywhere?” Junsu whispered. He scanned for Yoochun injuries, his forehead creased with worry.
Suddenly Yoochun felt joyous because he’d have a lifetime to love Junsu, to make him forget all his anger and hostility. He pulled back and gave a dimpled smile at the boy.
“Hurt! You have saved my life and I owe all to you. And you, my baby, will eat.”
“Junsu managed to smile at him. “If I won’t?”
Yoochun lifted one of his dark eyebrows. “I hadn’t thought on that, but knowing your constant disobedience, I shall probably force you to eat.”
Junsu put his small hand on his. “I wish…” Junsu said quietly.
“Yes? What is it you wish?”
“I wish that this morning will be different. It is as if we were at Valentine and you were the man I met and there were no more hate between us.”
“I would also like that hatred to be gone,” he said quietly. No other words he could have said would have meant more to Junsu.

What followed was, for Junsu, blissful days of learning to know Yoochun, of laughter, of the decreasing fear he had grown to feel.
“My lord!” Taecyeon shouted. “A messenger came from the King, an invitation for a tournament.”
“A tournament?” Junsu said from his seat on the mossy bank. “It is safe? What about Top? Is it safe to be near the King when Top also wants to take the throne?”
“Top had been killed in the battle.” Yoochun stared down at him. “Do you want to see the court and the tournament?”
“Yes! Yoochun, I want to go. I want to go.” Yoochun knelt and put a hand on Junsu’s shoulder.
“Then, we should go.” He turned to Taecyeon. “Tell the messenger that the Black Lion and the Black Guard challenge all.”
Taecyeon grinned. “Already done that!”
Yoochun’s face hardened, but before he could speak, Junsu laughed. “It’s good that your men know you well, isn’t it?”
He stared at Junsu for a moment and then relaxed. “Yes, what you said was true. Go now and ready yourselves. We will leave tomorrow.”
When they were alone, he turned to Junsu. “Are you well enough to travel? Did the wound hurt you much?”
“Nope! It doesn’t hurt anymore. Just a sting here and there.” Junsu held up his hand for his hand pulled Yoochun down to sit beside him. “Now, tell me about the court, the King, the Queen and the other earl and…”
“You go too fast. Be still and I will tell you all I can about the round table.”
“A round table? As in the King’s Arthur round table?”
“Yes, the name is same but it describes three days of games, jousting and eating. Do you think you can survive the excitement?” His black eyes twinkled.
Junsu knew he teased. “Tell me about the queen, is she a great beauty?”
Yoochun laughed and began to talk of a life s familiar to him, so new and awesome to Junsu.
