Well clearly you should come to the Boston area ;)
I am not a help with Canada, but Maine is pretty easy! York or Ogunquit are just as nice to stay at as well. I know we LOVE Camden, the Hartstone Inn is where we stayed, and there is also the Camden Harbor Inn.
Have you been to Portland before? The Portland Harbor Hotel is really nice, and there is a lot to do in the area.
Freeport is also great, there are some nice places to stay, lots of shopping and it is close to Portland. Haraseeket Inn is where we almost had our reception.
We did Portland 5 years ago before we had kids and LOVED IT. Seriously, it's gorgeous there. We stayed at The Portland Regency Hotel & Spa and it was lovely. I don't know how kid friendly it is b/c we didn't have kids yet so I wasn't tuned in to that. We also visited Freeport (hello OUTLETS!!) and Kennebunkport and loved both.
So much stuff here - thanks so much!! I'm going to go through and research all of your suggestions tonight. We would be going in either July or August - Rory has to take 2 weeks consecutively and we can do it whenever we would like. I was hoping you would chime in. Your pictutes of Maine totally sold me on the idea!
that is awesome, in 2 weeks you could definitely do maine + canada. my parents did a canada trip after visiting us at camp one summer... I think they took an auto-ferry from the bar harbor area, I am not sure.
you can also hit any of the outlets (kittery, just over hte NH border, or freeport) on your way up through maine because you essentially pass through both towns as you drive north along the coast. :) is there any chance you would go during the first 2 weeks of july? we'll be there from the 3rd until approx the 15th. fyi, we'll be in NY after that, probably until the 28th, so I hope I won't miss you again!
Looks like you've gotten a lot of great advice on Maine.. I can fill in the blanks for Nova Scotia (& Cape Breton) and PEI. It's beautiful!!! How long will you have? I can give you a full report on places to stay and things to do. Will reply later when I have more time!
Ok.. I found an email that I sent to my cousin about the route we took.. I'll paste it here. Be warned, it's long. I'll edit it a bit cause the driving from Canada won't apply to you
( ... )
Thanks so much for this!! What was it that you didn't like about the Keltic Lodge? It was recommended to us by someone else as a kid-friendly place. A lot to keep in mind when traveling with a baby and a toddler!
I am so excited to check out all of the links you posted. Thanks so much again!
I'll second everyone's suggestions for Maine: Portland, Camden, Bar Harbor. Freeport is worth a stop if you like shopping (as are the Kittery Outlets). Would love to see you if we are in town when you're visiting - we're out west for a lot of the summer.
I second Samoset... Especially if you golf. Also Asticou on mt. desert island, bar harbor area. I'm on iPhone... More about southern Maine and other parts of new England to come.
