I'm in the midst of reading Thousand Cranes by Kawabata Yasunari. For some reason, the book is extremely reassuring to me, maybe because the form is so familiar. Even when it makes me uncomfortable. I'm enjoying it - it's a quick read, I should be done soon.

My weekend was singularly low-key. Saturday we spent the afternoon in the National Portrait Gallery and caught Stardust in the evening (a great movie, btw, and highly recommended, especially if you're a fan of The Princess Bride.) Sunday was the day of bookstores.

This is one of my favorite series of books from childhood, and this trailer seems to indicate that the movie is going to be way off base. What happened to England? Welsh mythology? Before Transformers on Wednesday, a preview was shown for a monster or alien-invasion movie shot entirely on camcorder, without any info accompanying it other than the release date: 1-18-08. Wow! THIS is incredible! I would picture that happening in Ithaca or Madison faster than in Dallas. I'm looking forward to seeing this.
