viral

Before Transformers on Wednesday, a preview was shown for a monster or alien-invasion movie shot entirely on camcorder, without any info accompanying it other than the release date: 1-18-08. Which is also, apparently, the rudimentary website for the upcoming movie (yep, that weird picture is all there is).

Busting out my google-fu, it seems this movie is called Cloverfield, and all of this is part of a huge viral marketing campaign that includes a puzzle site called Ethan Haas Was Right and a spin-off called Ethan Haas Was Wrong. This looks a lot like what they're doing for Secret World/Cry Gaia (an upcoming MMO game).

It's interesting and mysterious and I'll probably follow it as it develops. It seems like "viral" advertising is the in thing lately, and while it's novel and more thoughtful than just blasting you with product information over and over, it's still an advertising gimmick.

Ah well. I'll still enjoy the puzzles and riddles and will probably see the movie when it comes out. But it does lead me to the question - what do you think about viral advertising? Do you enjoy it, or does it annoy you?

wtf, tales of the odd, movies, geekery
