La Serenissima

Last day in Venice. We couldn't get another night at the hotel, so we're moving on to Florence. The pope seems to be going fast, so I have no clue how Rome is going to turn out. We saw the pope splashed all over tv last night, but we couldn't tell why. I had a dream last night that Dr. Ivy (who was suddenly in Italy for some random reason) told me that they had so much news on the pope because he wore his hat wrong in a ceremony. Wish it was that, instead of that the guy's dying.

Anyway, Venice has been wonderful. It's really a tourist town, but I love it because it still has so much mystery. You can never explore all the side streets that locals just disappear into; tourists don't get to see past the glitter. The fact that there aren't any cars here is also awesome, especially after the craziness of crosswalks in Milan.

The whole time here, I've been putting places to names in one of my favorite series of books which takes place partly in La Serrenissima (the most serene one, aka Venice). We went to the Basilica, which has a ceiling covered in gold mosaic, and the Dogal palace, which is covered in huge paintings. We also found the lowest price on ice cream in the city.

And I got my mask! It's green and gold and almost a moon shape, and I didn't see another one like it at all that day. The lady who made it signed it with VENEZIA and her name for me. She said that she learned the trade from her family. I've decided that I'm either going to marry an carnevale mask maker and move here or learn Italian and get a job in a hotel here so I can live near Venice.^_^

Oh, and we ran into Anna Womble and her boyfriend on a back street in Venice yesterday. I saw her as we were passing, and it took me a minute to realize I knew that face and to put a name to it. It was incredibly random.

Will write more later if I get the chance.
