[ETA since this hit metafandom : Please read the comments to this entry before asking any questions, I know there are quite a lot of comments, but it's possible that your query may have already been answered. If you're still unsure, then you can post a comment, but I've lost count of the amount of times I've answered the same questions in 50 different places. Thanks! :)]
Further to yesterdays post, I can happily inform you all that the situation has now been resolved, and the default for all entries set back to "adult concepts"!
I opened a support request yesterday, explaining the issue, and recieved this messsage back from LJ this morning:
Thank you for your inquiry. When explicit adult content is brought to our attention, we reserve the right to flag communities, journals, or entries.
In this situation, we have re-reviewed the community 'merlin_femslash' and find it to be in a grey area, as nearly half of the visible entries at the time of review contained explicit adult content.
At this time, we have changed the flag on the community to be "adult concepts" but flagged several of the most recent entries as "explicit", as they should be.
It is the maintainer's responsibility to require members of a community to put the appropriate adult content label on entries, and should this community be reported again in the future we will re-evaluate. Should more than half of the visible entries contain explicit adult content, we may once again set the "explicit" flag on the entire community.

Unfortunately, that isn't the end of the story:
1) I have posted a complaint as to the way the situation was dealt with. My complaint is that they have seen fit to lecture us on the way we run the comm, and yet failed to let us do our job by not communicating with us. The Mod's are not 6 year old children who need telling how to do things, and should have been informed of the flagging so that we could deal with it. To add insult to injury, LJ then didn't even contact us when they changed the setting. I forsee a long argument about this, but we will keep fighting until we get a resolution that'd better include a groveling apology from LJ :P
2) We need to prevent this from happening again.
Reluctantly - I'm going to have to change the ratings of any posts that have been tagged rating : NC-17. I would really, really rather not do this, as it goes against everything I believe, but whilst I'm still having it out with LJ, I suggest keeping a low profile and playing at good girls for a while. If you know you've an NC-17 post out there, you could do me a massive favour and change the rating, but I will get round to them all soon.
So far, I don't know if this'll be permenant - LJ might decide that only posts that have the explicit content directly in this comm (not linked to another journal) need to be changed, but I'll keep you informed of what I hear (if anything)
Lastly, the mod team would like thank everyone for their patience and help in the last post, and to extend our eternal gratitude to 1miracle, and the mods over at merlinxarthur and merlinslash for all their help and mutual support in the late hours of last night. TEAMWORK, it's what makes the world go 'round! :D
